This Valentine¡¯s Day gift idea offers a great personal, loving, touch on a traditional gift favorite: the journal. Obviously, the journal is a gift best suited for someone who already uses a journal, or has been thinking about starting one (man or woman). Giving it to someone who doesn¡¯t journal will greatly degrade its value.
Journal From Scratch?
Making a good, durable journal from scratch can be hard. For that professional look, a bound journal would be ideal, but it¡¯s very hard to bind a book properly at home if you¡¯ve never done so before. If you would like to make the journal from scratch, plan for a less formal sheaf of papers (made with a spiral plastic binding crimp or with folded and stapled pages underneath a homemade cover).
Personalized Custom Journal
Instead of putting your effort into making the journal from scratch, put your efforts into spicing up a pre-made journal. You can buy a cheap journal at a store for less than 6$--plain journals are better, whether a single color journal or one with a small border pattern. Journals with a picture on the cover can be harder to work with, but are also usable. Journals with busy cover patterns are usually pointless! Leave them for customers who wouldn¡¯t need to cover the pattern to use it.
Materials
Obviously, the materials you need are going to vary based on the accessories and embellishments you choose, but the majority of the work you do can be done with the following:
Super glue
Scissors
Razor knife
Glue Stick
Stickers
Tape
Accessories and Embellishments
This is the heart and soul of your gift. The accessories you choose will make your gift personal, and let you express both your taste and your understanding of the gift recipients taste. Don¡¯t limit yourself to traditional Valentine¡¯s Day hearts and kisses¡ªgo for a theme that will be relevant year round, as the recipient writes in their journal. Try to use three-dimensional items which will give the journal texture, but avoid fragile or huge items that will make the journal hard to carry (like autumn leaves or pine cones).
Here are a few do it yourself journal ideas to get your creative juices flowing:
Abstract¡ªAs a novelty item, many office supply aisles are carrying circular and triangular paper clips made of interesting metals. When glued haphazardly on a journal front, they can make beautiful textured patterns. Intersperse matching stickers, glitter-glue lines, and die cuts.
Landscape¡ªJaggedly cut a swatch of green or grey construction paper and glue it as a horizontal stripe across the journal cover (both sides). Grab some tiny twigs from the ground outside, let them dry if necessary, and create a gnarled old tree with no leaves. Use very tiny twigs, and even split off pieces of twigs, to let you put at least 20 of them in the crown of the tree. Let both the trunk of the tree and its top run over the edge of your horizontal stripe. Use a simple round hole punch in dark grey or brown construction paper to make tiny dots, then glue these dots in a slightly curvy path from the bottom front of the journal up to the tree closer to the center of the journal. Dishevel and layer the dots 2 to 4 thick, to create a haphazard textured pattern.
Bordered Picture¡ªMany journals today come with a glossy plain colored cover, with one simple photograph centered on the front. Choose one with a photograph you like, such as a picture of a daisy, an animal, or a cartoon character. Create a square frame for the picture from a shiny foil paper or leftover gift wrap and glue it around the picture. Choose small objects that compliment the photo for texture (such as construction paper cutouts, thick stickers, die cuts, shapes fabric pieces, or even patches meant for clothing) and super glue them around the border. Cut a piece from the shiny paper that is the same size as the border, but with no hole, and glue it on the back cover. Handwrite or print a small message, profound reminder, or quote on a high quality piece of resume paper (in the same size as the picture was) and glue it over the shiny border.
But What About Valentine¡¯s Day?
Wrap the gift in the most sickeningly loving red and pink gift wrap, with hearts, that you can find. Include a tiny cute stuffed animal or a chocolate rose to bring home the romance of the holiday to your partner. Valentine¡¯s Day is a great holiday for reminding each other of just how giddy love can make us, and a personalized journal gift is going to remind your partner of the connection between your personalities and minds. |
