INVITATIONS:

Get a picture of the birthday child, preferably dressed up in a cowboy or cowgirl outfit. Using a computer word processing program, fashion a single-page mock newspaper from the old west. Date it back in the 1800's. The main headline should be, "WHOLE TOWN INVITED TO SHERIFF (child's first name) BIRTHDAY BASH AT THE (child's last name) RANCH. Write an "article" about the upcoming celebration, sprinkling it liberally with "old west" references, and mention that, "the Sheriff particularly hopes to see his good friend (guest's name) there." Mention if you would like guest to dress in Western style clothing. Insert the picture of the child next to the article. Make up other funny, short headlines and articles, perhaps outlining some of the activities, and fill the rest of the page with them. Print it out on a single sheet of pale yellow paper, fold it up and place it in the envelope. 

DECORATIONS: 

Decorate the room with hay stacks (often available at craft stores around the fall or at Halloween web sites), coiled ropes hanging from posts or hooks, and any western-theme thrift store or garage sale items you can find (cowboy boots, saddles, wagon wheels, iron pots, old camping equipment, etc.).  If you have lanterns, use them for lighting. Drape your tables with checkered table cloths. Use tin pie plates for dishes and old tin cups to decorate your table.

Make cut outs out of plywood or heavy cardboard in the shapes of cacti, paint them green and stand them around the room. Another great decoration is "tumbleweeds." Get some large grapevine wreaths at a craft store, snip off the pieces binding the wreath, and pull the coils apart. Don't straighten them out, just pull the so the wreath looses shape. Twist the coils into a spherical shape, and place your tumbleweeds around the room or yard. 

ACTIVITIES:

If outdoors, water guns are a fun way to hold a shoot out. Kids can shoot at each other, or, if your water guns are powerful enough, shoot at some empty tin cans set up on a fence post.  Tie a rope in a lasso-style and have a contest in which kids try to rope an object by swinging it around and tossing the lasso. The object can be a simple wooden cut out, a fence post, or a small rocking horse. 

Pony or horse rides are ideal activities for an old west party if you can find a stable in your city that makes house calls and have the space outdoors. If you can't get a real horse, you might want to try to find one on springs for kids to take turns riding and posing with. 

REFRESHMENTS:

Put out a plate of gold (chicken) nuggets for guests. Serve cowboy foods, such as wieners and baked beans. Chili, salsa and tortilla chips or other Southwestern favorites also make great party food. Cut a sheet cake in the shape of a cactus plant, and frost it with green colored frosting.

GOODY BAGS:

Put candy and treats such as sheriff badges and chocolate coins wrapped in gold foil into a bandana, tying it up with a bit of twine.
