Many people rely on daycare centers and individuals to take care of their kids while they¡¯re away. Finding and choosing the right daycare provider isn¡¯t always an easy task. There are many concerns and issues that should be addressed before choosing a daycare provider. 

Many individuals advertise daycare services by means of newspaper ads and bulletin board notices. How does a parent know for sure if these individuals have your child¡¯s best interest in mind? When inquiring on daycare services provided by individuals, ask for references. These references should include people they have babysat for in the past, as well as those they currently provide services for. Ask for at least 3 references that are not related to the individual. Get addresses of these individuals as well as phone numbers, and keep the information for future reference if needed. A reliable and trustworthy childcare provider will be more than willing to provide references. 

Visit the home of a potential childcare giver, and bring your child along. Visit during a time when other children are in the home, and watch how the person interacts with the children. Talk to the daycare provider at length, and get to know them a little bit better. Ask to see the areas of the home where your child will be allowed to play, eat meals and snacks, and take naps. Ask to see the bathroom facilities as well. This is important so you can be sure your child will be cared for in a clean environment. A home with any number of children, of course, won¡¯t be spotless, but it should be free of trash, clutter, and safety hazards. If you don¡¯t care for the personality of the daycare provider or have any doubts whatsoever about the condition of the home, politely thank them for allowing you to visit, and look elsewhere. 

When considering a commercial daycare center, it¡¯s important to look for many of the same qualities you would look for in a home daycare environment. Is the facility clean, and do the children appear happy? Does the atmosphere appear comfortable and child-friendly?  Is there chaos, or do the children seem to be involved in organized activities? Ask lots of questions. It is your right as a parent to ask questions until you get the answers you are seeking. 

Find out if the facility you are considering uses teaching materials, and ask to see those materials. A home daycare provider or commercial facility that offers organized lessons and activities will better serve your child. They will learn lessons that will help advance their knowledge as well as improve their social skills. This will provide them with greater confidence when they enter school. 

Commercial daycare fees are usually higher than home provider fees. This is largely due to overhead costs. One major benefit gained by using a commercial daycare provider is a valuable childcare tax deduction. Many home daycare providers don¡¯t claim the income on their taxes, and they will not allow you to claim the deduction on yours. This is something you should ask in advance before making a final decision on a daycare provider. You¡¯ll need to weigh the benefits of the tax deduction in comparison to the cost of the service provided. 

Your child is counting on you to take the necessary steps and precautionary measures to ensure his or her safety and well being while in the care of others. After choosing a daycare center, if ever you suspect your child is not being properly cared for, remove them from the facility immediately. Your parental instincts are a great tool in the decision making process when finding and choosing a daycare provider.
