While visitors come to greet your new bundle of joy, you don¡¯t want them to walk in to a smelly nursery.  When you think of visiting someone who has a newborn baby the first thing you think of is how nice the baby smells when they have just had a bath and had baby powder sprinkled on them.  You don¡¯t want your guests to walk into your home or nursery to find an unpleasant odor in it. 

You want to keep the environment around your baby clean and healthy. Some general housekeeping may be all that is required to rid your nursery of any unpleasant smells.  You can start with the nursery wastebasket.   When empty, wash the nursery wastebasket with baking soda and warm water.  Doing this regularly will help eliminate any odors.  If you are using disposable diapers, you can sprinkle baking soda over the dirty diapers to help keep the smell down between cleaning the wastebasket.  To deodorize the wastebasket sprinkle it with baking soda in between liner changes.

There are many cleaners on the market.  Be very careful of what cleaners you use around your baby.  Always make sure that all cleaners are out of baby and toddlers reach.  Take caution when using common cleaners in your baby¡¯s room because some children suffer acute reactions to the fumes and fragrances given off from cleaning solutions.  Some fumes from your cleaning products may produce an allergic reaction in your baby.  This could cause rashes, sneezing, or possibly even headaches.

Most of the cleaning in your babies room can be done with safe and basic ingredients that you can find on your pantry shelves - lemon juice, baking soda, or vinegar to name a few.  Homemade cleaning formulas cost far less than their commercial counterparts.  Whichever cleaners you decide to use always make sure they are out of reach and are labeled.  Remember to never mix ammonia containing products with any product that contains lye or chlorine bleach, and never mix chlorine based products with those containing acid. 

If you are interested in making your own cleaners, you can make a creamy soft scrub by pouring baking soda in a bowl and adding enough liquid detergent until it gets to the consistency of cake frosting.  Apply this solution with a sponge to your surface that needs to be cleaned.  You will find that this solution will rinse off easily and will not leave any residue. 

To make vinegar cleaner/deodorizer fill a clean spray bottle with straight five percent vinegar.  You can spray this on your surface that needs to be cleaned and wipe it off.    

With a little elbow grease and a few items that you have stored in your pantry, you can create cleaners to help you have a clean, odor free nursery that you will be proud to have visitors come in to visit at any time.  Let you guests leave thinking about how nice a new baby smells instead of how smelly their nursery can be.
