So, you¡¯re expecting a baby! Or perhaps you are in the process of adopting a newborn. In either case, choosing an appropriate name is one of the most important things you must do in preparation for your new arrival.
Studies have shown that the name you choose for your child can greatly impact his or her life. Here are some tips to help you decide on the perfect name for your new baby:
- Your Last Name
Your last name should be an important factor when you are choosing your baby¡¯s name. If your last name has several syllables, then you may want to avoid first names with a lot of syllables. If your last name is Werzenewski, for example, giving your daughter a name like Isabella would be quite a mouthful.
- Family Names
Family names are often passed down from generation to generation. If your father¡¯s name is Leo, for example, you may want to honor your dad by giving his name to your son. But be careful-- if you have a brother named Leo, he may be planning to have a Leo Jr. someday. If in doubt about a name, talk to your family beforehand. Better to avoid a family feud from the onset.
-Traditional Names
Certain names have been always been popular. The name Michael has been one of the most common boy¡¯s names for decades. If you like to follow tradition, check the Social Security Administration¡¯s website for a listing of the top names from each year since the late 1800¡¯s.
-Trendy Names
Trendy names are quite in vogue these days, as are unisex names. Just keep in mind that if you name your daughter Riley, she may someday have a boyfriend with the same name!
-Unique Names
If you have a common last name, like Smith, you may want to go this route. A unique name will set your child apart. However, always think about the future. While naming your daughter Poppy may sound adorable now, think ahead. Your child will not be a cute little baby or toddler forever and she may not enjoy answering to that name as she gets older. A 65 year old named Candy may not feel so cute either.
-Ethnic Sounding Names
In a recent study, job applicants sent two identical resumes to the same employer. On one resume the applicants used their given, ethnic sounding name. On the second resume they used a common, more popular name. Shockingly, the applicants with ethnic sounding names were less likely to get a call for a job interview, even though the two resumes they sent in were identical. While this is an unfortunate conclusion, it is something you may want to keep in mind when naming your baby. A woman named Tammy may be more likely to get hired than a woman named Tanika. Of course, if you love ethnic sounding names and they are an important part of your culture, you should embrace them.
-Unusual Spellings
You may think you¡¯re being cute by giving your child a uniquely spelled name, but you are really only setting him or her up for a lifetime of difficulty. A girl named Gennaphyr will spend her whole life correcting the spelling of her name. Do your child a favor and stick to the traditional spellings.
-Nicknames
If you dislike nicknames, then you may want to avoid names that can be shortened. If you name your daughter Deborah, for example, people will be calling her Deb or Debbie by the time she reaches grade school no matter what you say.
-Think Before You Name
Some names just have a negative stigma to them. A girl named Bertha will be perceived as less popular than a girl named Katie, even if that is not the case. And by naming your son Englebert, you may be setting him up for a rough time on the school yard.
- Say it out loud.
If you find a name you like, make sure you say the first, middle and last name out loud. This way you can hear how it sounds together. What you thought was the perfect name may not sound so hot when you hear it combined with your last name.
- Always have a back up name.
Even though the ultrasound technician has assured you that you are having a baby girl, make sure you choose a boy¡¯s name as well, just to be safe. Every so often, an ultrasound may incorrectly predict a baby¡¯s sex. Having a backup name will give you a one less thing to worry about if that happens.
Finally, sometimes you just need to see your baby before you can choose a definitive name. While you may have spent your entire pregnancy referring to your unborn son as Jack, you may take one look at his sweet little face once he¡¯s born and decide he¡¯s a Sammy instead.
