Tradition holds that the 4oth wedding anniversary is the ruby anniversary. When helping friends celebrate this milestone you may wish to keep this in mind. Don¡¯t limit yourself to tradition though; There are many clever and innovative ways to conceive a gift that will be cherished for years.

One way I¡¯ve found to really make an impression, if the couple is dear to you, is to create a scrapbook of mementos and photographs that highlight key events in their years together. With the assistance of a good graphics program, some lovely stationary and stickers, glitter etc, this can be a fun and relatively easy project that will become a lasting tribute. Another option is to purchase a wedding album from a local Hallmark store, and find a photograph of their original ceremony. Usually these albums have a sleeve in the front for a picture. Appropriate pages can be removed and by leaving only the guest-book pages, it can serve as a register for those attending the party to sign and leave their good wishes.

If you are not inclined to crafting anything, you may opt for the more customary approach. The theme for a ruby anniversary may dictate a color palate. A lovely vase or candy dish in a ruby red shade would be an option. Keeping to the red scheme will show you are thoughtful in commemorating the event. A set of Champaign flutes boxed in red velvet or an appropriate gift box done up in red is also a good choice.

I always thought a plant makes a lasting and welcome gift. You might consider any houseplant potted in some shade keeping with a red theme. If this clashes with their d¨¦cor you may want to reconsider. A set of monogrammed towels or pillow cases with intertwined red initials might be just the thing, or make it an entire set with a high thread count.  Gift baskets with gourmet treats, or bath salts and massage oils might be a good idea so they can have an evening of indulgent pampering. An assortment of 40 gourmet chocolates, or themed gifts from the local card store might work. The whole numbers thing can get hokey though. (Etched glass with the number 40 and the like¡­) That spells tacky to me!

 Gift certificates for a couples massage, or spa day would be another option. This lets you provide the couple with a nurturing experience. You might also check into their favorite restaurant and purchase gift certificates there. Another good idea is perhaps a $40 gift certificate to a local movie theatre.  If you know the couple to have a particular shared interest or hobby such as golfing or bowling you may wish to get them certificates for the local alley or putting range. If keeping things simpler because of budget constraints, or if the couples are simply acquaintances, a decent bottle of wine or Champaign is always welcome. You may wish to save the big bucks for their golden anniversary in the next decade!
