Teen mothers typically have a very difficult road ahead of them. Many of them are high school dropouts who find it hard to ever earn their high school diplomas. Teen moms may also be the product of homeless shelters and group homes. If a teenager doesn¡¯t have a good support system either from friends or family, she may not become successful in supporting herself or her child.
Mentoring programs for teenager mothers are gaining ground throughout the country, and the graduates of these programs continue to show success in their personal lives and in the lives of their children. There are several aspects to a teen mentoring program for young mothers.
The first and probably most important role of a mentor is to be sure the mother-to-be is getting good prenatal care. Once the baby is born, mentors will need to make sure that the mother understands just how to care for her infant. Most typical first time mothers will be overwhelmed with the responsibility of caring for a newborn. These feelings are usually escalated in a teenage mother.
Teen mentoring programs should provide plenty of information to a young girl on what to expect during her pregnancy, labor, and child birth. Her education should also include how to care for a newborn baby. A mentor should take an active role of communicating often with the teenager and helping her learn to care for her child.
Once the physical needs of the young mother and child are met, a mentor needs to be aware of the teen¡¯s emotional needs as well. A mentor should try and develop a close, trusting relationship with the young mother, so that she feels comfortable contacting the mentor if she is overwhelmed with feelings of inadequacy or suffers from postpartum depression.
A teenage mother should be encouraged to meet with other teen mothers for counseling sessions. These sessions will prevent the teen from having feelings of isolation due to her situation. Bonds between young mothers should be encouraged, and a mentor should take the time to ensure that the teen attends childcare classes and counseling sessions with other young mothers.
The goal of a teen mentoring program should not only be to sustain these young mothers, but also to encourage them to set goals and plan ahead for their future and the futures of their children. If the teenager has dropped out of school to have a baby, a mentor can help the teen find out about various programs that will enable her to achieve her diploma. Mentors can help teens with filing the paperwork needed to apply for scholarships and financial aid so that they can attend college.
The teen should be encouraged to maintain at least a part time job. A mentor can help the teen learn to manage her money appropriately and to set a manageable budget. The mentor can check with the teen¡¯s employer to find out how she is doing in her job and if there are any problems that may occur.
The mentor should continue to keep in close contact with the young mother by seeing her regularly, talking to her on the phone, and making sure she is attending any meetings and/or classes. The mentor may want to make the young mother an important part of her own family by inviting her and her child to family dinners, outings, etc. This can be especially important if the teenager doesn¡¯t have any other family or support system. Mentoring a teenage mother can be a rewarding way to volunteer one¡¯s time. Mentoring can help that young woman develop and reach her goals and provide for the futures of her child and herself. |
