Whether you have to or want to return to work, finding quality daycare for your child is an important task. You will have to try to judge the abilities and character of the person who will be caring for your children part-time.

Always be sure to observe the person with other children in the setting that your child will be located. A good caregiver should show signs of carefully listening and observing the children. Hopefully she will set and maintain limits for the children that you feel will be good for your child.  She deals with situations in a timely and thoughtful manner. Encouraging children to think up their own solutions to problems and activities is a good sign. 

In addition to the general suggestions above, make a list of specific requirements that you have. Do you want your child in a home setting or in a child-care center? Think about location in relation to your drive to and from work. It should be convenient. Do you want the center to be near your house or near where you work? Think about what you have to do if an emergency occurs. Are the caregivers certified by the Red Cross in resuscitation methods? Where would be the nearest hospital? Always make a backup plan for the occasions that an in-home caregiver would be unavailable.

Be realistic about how much it will cost. A center that will cost more than you make is probably not a good choice. What is the holiday and summer schedule for the person or center? How many children are there in the at-home care center? Laws limit how many children a single caregiver should care for based on the child's age. What is the child-caregiver ratio at the childcare center? Think about how large a group you want with your child. What are the qualifications of the caregivers? States vary on how much and the types of training for caregivers. What is the turnover rate for caregivers in a center. The slower the turnover, the more stabile environment your child may find there. You should be able to enter a center and observe without calling ahead. Finally do not forget about discipline. 

Be sure to check references and ask any questions you have. Some questions will be different for a childcare center versus an in-home situation. Other common questions to ask are hand-washing policies, what role does television play, cleanliness of toys, outside play area safety and is the place secure from strangers. Are snacks provided and if so, what kind of food is typical. What is the policy for field trips? Who drives the vans for the center and how are they selected? Does the in-home caregiver smoke, taken a TB test recently and have available transportation if necessary?

Trust your intuition. If something does not feel right then go somewhere else. With the explosion of national chains, independent centers, in-home care and non-profits, you can find a solution that you feel comfortable with. Do not forget to listen to your child though, if they come home regularly upset or other signs that they are unhappy, remember they are the ones there in person. After making sure that it just is not part of the adjustment, look into your child's questions.
