The lives of today¡¯s teenagers are filled with stressful situations. Stress is the result of change and it causes emotional and physical reactions in people. While stress is inevitable, there are techniques to manage it that can reduce its negative impact on an individual or situation. Stress often has an extreme impact on teenagers because they are less experienced than adults at handling the changes they encounter in everyday life, and they are facing rapid hormonal and physical changes.
The following tips and techniques are intended especially for teens to help navigate the difficult stresses they face.
Social stress: Teens can encounter social stress in many forms including peer pressure, bullying, teasing, striving for popularity, and romance. The best antidote to social stress is to develop a strong social circle. Teens who belong to social groups are better equipped to deal with difficult social situations. While teens who have close friends or are member of teams or clubs still face pressures and teasing, they generally report being more self-confident. Much of this stems from knowing other teens are dealing with similar situations or just having people they can confide in. Social isolation makes stress worse, while bonding with others over social situations is a great stress reliever. So, tell your friends what is on your mind or ask around to see if anyone else has had to deal with a similar problem? If you don¡¯t have a strong social circle, make a point to get active in a group of people who share one or some of your interests.
Physical stress: During the teenage years, the human body undergoes rapid changes, all of which are stressful. Raging hormones cause emotional and physical reactions and developing bodies are in constant flux. While these stresses happen to everyone, the teens who most successfully weather them are the ones who get to know their bodies. Physical fitness benefits teens mentally, emotionally and physically. To combat the changes to your body, eat healthy foods and exercise regularly. The positive effects of exercise not only improve physical health, but promote an overall sense of well-being unmatched by any other fix. Yoga, an age-old exercise practice, has recently become popular with teens for its use in stress reduction. Yoga promotes flexibility and strength, but also teaches breathing and physical awareness techniques that are extremely beneficial to stress reduction.
Family and environmental stresses: Problems at home, stemming from parental discord or divorce, the death of a family member, family financial worries or health problems can weigh especially heavy on the mind of a teen. Teens residing in unsafe areas may be constantly worried or afraid because of their environments. Since teens usually do not have control over the causes or solutions of these stresses, they may feel extremely helpless and frustrated. The best techniques for combating these stresses are personal solutions. Study and practice relaxation techniques, eat a healthy diet and keep yourself healthy by exercising. Take control of the life areas you can affect. While you cannot single-handedly make a neighborhood safer, you can try things like always walking with a friend, staying indoors at night and keeping doors locked. Do not engage in negative thinking; instead try to address problems constructively.
Performance stress: Teens often push themselves to do well at school, jobs and extracurricular activities. It is easy for teens to exhaust themselves with overscheduled lives. Combat this stress by prioritizing the way you spend your time. Is it important to be in four clubs if you really only enjoy two of them? What sports are practiced in different seasons so you do not end up overbooked? Some tasks like schoolwork cannot be removed from the schedule, however you can break projects into reasonable and attainable goals. Perfection is not necessary, but a solid effort is something of which to be proud. |
