Putting children to bed can sometimes be a challenge. Creating a soothing and consistent ritual can help smooth out the bumps of bedtime for babies and toddlers.
Why is ritual important?
A ritual is simply an established routine. Children thrive on comfortable and consistent routines; so rituals can be used to make bedtime a predictable and pleasant time of day for parents and children. Children like knowing what to expect and what is expected of them; by creating a ritual early, it will help them to recognize the cues of bedtime even as some elements may change.
What kinds of things should be part of a ritual?
When establishing a ritual for your child, keep in mind that it should fit well into your family¡¯s lifestyle and schedule. For example, if it is easier for you to bathe baby in the morning, then bath time would not be a logical part of your bedtime ritual.
It is also useful to have a somewhat portable ritual. For example, your ritual should include elements you can take with you when you travel. This might include a favorite blanket, books, the stars in the sky, a portable night-light or other small items. If a ritual involves a permanent fixture of your home ¨C for example a walk around to say goodnight to all the toys in the playroom ¨C vacations and overnight visits may become a challenge since the ritual cannot be followed.
The ritual elements should be soothing, with the intent of preparing the child to relax and go to sleep. Things like rambunctious play, loud music and other stimulating activities should be left for earlier in the day.
What are some great soothers to include in the bedtime ritual?
Every family can develop their own perfect bedtime ritual by combining a few of the following ideas:
1. A warm bath: The soothing effects of warm water are well known. Warm water relaxes the muscles and has the added benefit of washing the sticky dirt of the day off of baby. Several manufacturers now offer baby bath formulas with soothing scents such as lavender and chamomile that are perfect for bedtime.
2. Story time: The benefits of reading to children are well documented. Reading stories at bedtime helps develop an early habit of reading together in addition to being a relaxing activity. Settle into a comfortable chair or sofa and enjoy some great stories, rhymes or poems together.
3. Soft songs: Whether you sing lullabies or play soft music, relaxing songs are a wonderful way to prepare for bedtime. Just make sure not to play rousing music or your little ones may end up dancing instead of snoozing. Even the youngest infants enjoy lullabies.
4. Necessary grooming: Make the nightly necessities part of the bedtime ritual. Put on pajamas, wash face, use the bathroom, brush teeth. Do it in the same order every night so your toddler always knows what the next step is.
5. Adjust the lights: Toddlers love turning lights on and off so let your child control the light. Toddlers can switch off the lights before getting tucked in or can be responsible for switching on a night light.
6. Pray or give thanks: Depending on your belief system, nighttime may call for prayers. Even if you do not pray before bed, consider giving thanks or discussing the good things that happened during the day.
7. Have snuggle buddies: A lovey makes bedtime far better. Whether the lovey is a beloved bear, a blankie or a spotted fleece lizard, something to snuggle is soothing and comforting for any toddler. For young babies, consider keeping the object close to Mom¡¯s skin for a while, so it carries the familiar scent.
8. Tuck in time: Create a tucking in ritual. Pull up the sheets and blankets, fluff the pillows and exchange hugs and kisses. Offer comforting words such as ¡°sweet dreams¡±, ¡°sleep tight¡±, or the always appropriate ¡°I love you¡± and your little one will soon be drifting off happily to dreamland. |
