Building a snow family is a fun activity the whole family can enjoy. All you need is some snow on the ground and some warm clothes to make this into a family tradition to look forward to year after year. First, before you even head outside, have each person in the family gather an accessory or two for his or her snow person. These can be simple like baseball hats or scarves that represents each individual. 

Then, after bundling up, it¡¯s time to head outside. Have each person look around the yard for sticks to use as their snow person¡¯s arms. Also, rocks can be to be used for eyes and a mouth. If there are no stones to use for this purpose, parents may wish to provide charcoal briquettes for this use. If vegetables are available, radishes make great mouths on snow people since they are red and are tough enough to push into a snowball. Carrots, of course, can be used as noses.

Now, you are ready to start building the snow family. Each snow person will be made of 3 snowballs stacked one on top of the other. Family members first need to determine who the tallest member of the family is. The tallest person will have the largest ball as a ¡°bottom,¡± the second tallest person will have the second largest bottom ball, and so on. 

Begin by having someone roll a snowball for the bottom level of the tallest family member. Put that snowball where the snow family will ¡°stand¡± in the yard. Then, have family members roll a bottom ball for the second tallest person in the family that is slightly smaller than that of the tallest person. Continue this until all family members have a large bottom ball for their representative snow person. Once the bottom balls are rolled and put into place, it is time to work on the middle (body) snowballs and the snowballs that will serve as heads. Each family member can do this at the same time; the only rule is to make each ball slightly smaller than the one below it. As each person rolls a ball, it is placed on top of that person¡¯s snow person. Finally, all snow people should have three balls: a bottom, a middle (body), and a top (head).

Once the snow people bodies are stacked up, it is time to add the faces. Let each person put two sticks on either side of the middle balls; these sticks represent arms. Then, give each person a carrot nose and two stones or charcoal briquettes for eyes. Stones, charcoal briquettes, or radishes can be given to each family member in order to create the shapes of mouths on each of the snow people. 

Once the arms are in place and the faces are all pressed into the snowball heads, it is time to add accessories. At this point, each family member should take a turn adding the hat, scarf or other item to his or her representative snow person. Before adding his or her accessory, the family member should explain to the others why the item selected. For example, the father of a family may choose a baseball hat with his company¡¯s logo on it because it shows where he works. This part of building a snow family can be the most interesting part as often times family members will have very thoughtful reasons for selecting certain objects as ways to personalize their snow people. 

After each family member has completed his or her snow person, it is time to take photographs. It is nice to take photographs of each person next to his or her snow person. Also, if possible, it is a great idea to have a neighbor or friend take a photo of the entire family posing with the snow family. Not only are these photographs great remembrances, but they can be reprinted for use as family holiday cards in the coming year.
