What is a jogging stroller?
Jogging strollers are designed to keep both baby and parent comfortable when the parent exercises. These strollers, also called baby joggers, allow a parent to run or walk at a brisk pace while pushing a child in a stroller. Equipped to absorb more bumps and shocks than regular strollers, they help new parents maintain an active outdoor exercise regimen.
There are a wide variety of jogging strollers on the market today. In order to select the one that best fits your needs, it is important to be familiar with the available features.
Size:
How big is the stroller in its unfolded and folded states? Consider whether your baby or toddler will be comfortable sitting in it and whether it will grow with your child. Make sure it easily fits into your car or storage space.
Ease of use:
Make sure you are comfortable with all aspects of the operation of your stroller. Is it easy to fold and put up? Can you recline the seat quickly? Try walking and running with it to make sure it is easy to maneuver. How is the height of the handle or handles? Adjustable handles allow joggers of varying heights to stay comfortable with the same unit.
Wheels:
Wheel size varies dramatically on baby joggers. Units with larger wheels are designed for rough and rugged terrain, showing less response to bumps on the path. Strollers with smaller wheels offer more resistance but turn more easily; these are more appropriate for walkers who usually used paved paths. For those who plan to do a wide range of paces and terrains, a mid-sized jogger wheel of approximately 16 inches is probably best.
Shock absorption:
While the wheels do much of the shock absorption on jogging strollers, newer high-end models may also have shock absorbers and suspension systems. Joggers who run on unpaved paths or hiking trails may want to consider investing in these options for a smoother system.
Other options:
Consider the settings for reclining the back of the stroller. Reclining is very desirable since children may nap during long jogs or hikes. How padded is the seat? If you take long walks, it is especially important for the seat to be very comfortable. Is the sunshade big enough to really screen baby from the elements? A see-through window in the shade with a cover-up flap is handy for looking at baby without breaking your stride. If the shade is waterproof, it will help with those unexpected rainstorms, too.
Look to see whether the unit has cup holders for both you and your baby; a place to stash a water bottle is a great feature. A storage basket is also handy for keeping extra sweatshirts, wipes, snacks and other baby gear.
Jogging strollers are available in a wide price range, so the most important thing to do is to define the features you really need before you start shopping. Generally, the models with the most flexibility and features are at the highest end of the price spectrum, but keep in mind you may not be happy with fewer features. Since people only use these units for a few years, used strollers can be a good bargain. If money is an issue but you want a top of the line model, try checking local consignment stores, garage sales and online auctions for good deals on baby joggers. |
