With stories of Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS) abounding in the news, parents-to-be can get very nervous about choosing safe, yet comfortable bedding for their infant. New research suggests bedding that moves around an infant¡¯s head creates a pocket that is then filled with exhaled carbon dioxide and is breathed back into the infant¡¯s lungs. Besides the risk of SIDS you also must consider the comfort of your infant. You want your infant to be warm and relaxed while he sleeps. All of this considered, here are some guidelines to follow when choosing safe and comfortable bedding for your infant.
Use only tight-fitting and secure bedding.
Fluffy blankets may seem like a great idea to aid in your infant¡¯s comfort while sleeping, but they pose a major SIDS risk. It is recommended by health care professionals and organizations that no blankets at all be used in infants cribs. Instead blanket sleepers, outfits that look like a heavy nightgown with the bottom sewn together and a zipper down the front are suggested. Crib sheets should also be tightly fitted and made specifically for crib mattresses. Do not try to save money by buying larger sheets and trying to alter them to fit the crib mattress.
Do not place loose items in the crib.
Items, such as stuffed animals or soft toys may make your infant¡¯s crib look nice, but these items can pose safety hazards. Besides impairing breathing, hard eyes or other embellishments on stuffed items can pose risks. Keep items like these on a shelf or somewhere else in the room. Included in the scope of loose items are pillows. While adults find pillows a necessity, infants do not need them and for safety reasons should not have one in their crib. The infant¡¯s bed should be free of anything besides the crib sheet.
Make sure any accessories are secure.
Accessories, such as bumper pads, should be securely tied to the bed to prevent them from becoming a loose hazard. Other items made for use in a crib, like mobiles, should also be checked to ensure they are installed properly and are not going to fall causing injury to your infant. Check any accessory items you add to your infant¡¯s crib for wear and make sure all parts are in place and in working order. If you are unsure if an item should be in your infant¡¯s crib error on the side of caution and do not put it in the crib.
Keeping in mind that cribs need fitted, secure and safe bedding and bedding accessories should help you make all the correct decisions when choosing safe and comfortable bedding for your infant. Buy items specifically made for infants. Do not get carried away because simple is best. Examine anything you use in your infants crib to make sure it is in good condition. If you are using second-hand items make sure you know exactly how to use the item if it does not have directions included. Remember these three basic guidelines so you and your infant can sleep peacefully.
