More accidents occur in the bathroom than in any other room of the house.  Many of these accidents involve children, and a lot of them could have been prevented by having child proofing procedures in place ahead of time.

    One way that most people don't even consider that children can be harmed in the bathroom is by drowning in the toilet. Child drownings claim thousands of lives every year, and many of them happen with their parents close by.  Did you know that a child can drown in less than an inch of water in under ninety seconds?  Most parents of drowned children felt they were supervising them or the child was out of sight for just a few minutes.  Unfortunately, a few minutes is all it can take for a curious toddler to topple into the toilet and drown.  Another common misconception is that a parent will hear some noise if their child is drowning.  Drowning is usually a silent occurrance.  Most of the time there is no splashing or calling for help.

     Toddlers are naturally curious about their surroundings.  Water is also a fascination for children.  These two don't mix.  Toddlers tend to be top-heavy, and their balance is not well-developed yet.  Toddlers also acquire new skills on a daily basis.  What they could not do yesterday may very well be the skill they learn today.  So it is very important to babyproof your toilet.  

     The first line of defense is a toilet lock.  There are a wide variety of styles available and fit any standard toilet.  They can be purchased at a hardware or discount store.   Some utilize adhesive clamps attached to the rim of the toilet, and others have a tension bar that sits on top of the toilet seat making it impossible for little hands to open.  It is important to remember to engage the device each time you leave the bathroom.  They don't work if you don't use them!

     A second line of defense is a door alarm that lets you know when the bathroom door has been opened.  Another choice is a lock block, which keep children from being able to turn the door handle and access the bathroom by themselves.  Or, you can simply install a hook and eye lock high on the door and keep it latched.  Any of these can also be purchased at a hardware or discount store.  These safety precautions only work if you use them consistently, however.

     When your child is ready for toilet training, do not leave them in the bathroom by themselves, even if you are using a potty chair instead of the larger toilet.  There are so many dangers in the bathroom that a child should never be in there unsupervised. 

     Each parent should also know CPR (cardio- pulmonary resuscitation).  If your child does fall into the water and stops breathing, knowing CPR can mean the difference between life and death.  As the minutes your child is not breathing increase, the greater the chance your child will have brain damage and other trauma.  Who wants to wait for the ambulance personnel to administer CPR?  They are trained to get there as quickly as possible, but as a parent, you will want to be doing all you can to save your child's life.  You can learn CPR through your local Red Cross chapter or hospital.  You may never need it, but if you do, you will be thankful you know how.              

     So, when planning your defense for keeping baby safe from possible drowning in the toilet, keep in mind three important things.  Use the babyproofing barriers such as toilet and door locks at all times.  Supervise your child whenever he or she is in the bathroom for any reason.  Do not leave them alone for even a second.  Last, learn CPR and basic emergency care so that if the worst does happen, you are prepared and can do something about it while you wait for emergency personnel to arrive.  Nothing can make life risk free, but you can do things to decrease the chance that your child will become a toilet drowning statistic.
