A baby monitor helps you listen to your baby when you are not in the same room. A baby monitor has a unit that picks up sounds from your baby and transmits them to another unit that you may carry to another place in your home. This can be helpful to let you hear when baby rouses from sleeping whether you are working around the house or sleeping yourself.

Audio or Video

While most of the units on the market are audio monitors, several companies offer monitors with video capability as well. These units include a video camera that you can point toward the crib. A receiver attaches to your television and allows you to see what your baby is doing. Video units are substantially more expensive than audio only units. Most parents do not find the video necessary, but consider this type of monitor if you are prone to worrying when you cannot see your baby or if your child has special needs and requires more monitoring than average. 

One-way or Two-way monitoring units

One-way monitors allow you to hear the sounds your baby is making, but do not allow you to transmit anything the other direction. Two-way monitoring units work more like walkie-talkies, allowing either unit to transmit and receive to the other. While some parents use this functionality to make soothing comments to their child, most use it like a parental intercom. With two-way units when your husband asks if there are extra wipes somewhere, you can easily answer without yelling. If you are interested in a two-way monitor, make sure you can shut off the two-way functionality so noise you make in the other parts of the house will not disturb a sleeping baby. 

Power

Baby monitors are either powered by batteries or by alternating current from wall outlets. If you want to be able to use your monitor in places without easy access to outlets, or to be able to carry it around with you, you probably want one that uses batteries. The most flexible models allow you to use either.  If you plan to use the portable battery option frequently, you may also want to make sure your chosen model has a clip that allows you to attach it to your belt or pocket. 

Number of receivers

If you routinely use a monitor receiver in multiple locations, you may want to consider one of the monitors with multiple receivers. This will keep you from moving your unit every time you go to a different room. For example, you might want one receiver in your bedroom to help you hear baby at night, and one in your kitchen for when you do chores during naptime. 

Range and channels

Most monitor packaging indicates the distance over which the unit will effectively work. Consider the size of your home and the rooms where you expect to use the monitor to make sure it has an appropriate range. 

Since monitors often use the same transmission frequencies as cordless phones, it is possible to get interference. A system with channel selection may help you reduce interference by switching to a less used channel. 

While a monitor is not a replacement for being in a room with your baby, it is a very valuable tool for new parents. A monitor can provide peace of mind and comfort for the whole family.
