A portable crib is a small crib that can be folded to be stored compactly. The sides are generally made of soft fabric and net, stretched over a collapsible frame; when the crib is set up a locking mechanism keeps it from folding inadvertently. A thin mattress is placed in the bottom of the crib. Portable cribs sit lower to the floor than traditional cribs and do not usually have as many adjustments for mattress height. Also, the sides of a portable crib do not slide down, so an adult must lean over the sides to place the baby into the crib. Most modern portable cribs double as playpens and can be used to confine an active baby for short time periods as well as for sleeping.
A portable crib is useful under many circumstances. Some people with limited living space use a portable crib instead of a full-sized one simply because of the more compact size. Portable cribs are also extremely useful for travel. A baby accustomed to sleeping in a portable crib often will sleep better at a hotel or relative¡¯s house in the familiar crib than in a rental or borrowed crib. The familiar scents and sensations of the crib can lend comfort in a strange environment.
For those who travel frequently, taking a portable crib reduces some of the worry in travel planning. Some hotels simply do not offer portable cribs. Other hotels have limited quantities of cribs or add surcharges for the use of their cribs. In addition, anyone concerned about health or safety issues with portable cribs will not have to worry about the origins of a hotel-provided crib, whether it had been subject to a safety recall, or about the germs and chemical agents to which it may have been exposed.
Even at home, a portable crib comes in handy. Even the most baby-proofed home presents hazards to crawling infants; parents can use a portable crib to confine baby on those occasions when they must step away or move attention away from the baby for a moment. Place baby in the portable crib with some favorite toys when taking out the garbage, using the restroom or performing other necessary actions that are hard to do with a baby in tow. A portable crib can be used to take baby outside on a lawn or deck, or to keep baby from wandering off at a park picnic or camping trip.
A portable crib also provides a safe place for visiting babies to nap or sleep overnight. And, in addition to having their own at home, parents may want to equip grandparents or other frequently visited relatives with portable cribs to make visits easier and safer. A portable crib also can give baby a safe, comfortable place to sleep at a day-care provider¡¯s home.
Portable cribs are available with many advanced features. Some provide bassinets for tiny infants to use before they grow into the larger portable crib. Others have changing table attachments to make changing diapers on the go as simple as it is at home. For those who plan to use the portable crib outdoors, models with tents screen the crib from the sun and elements. Portable cribs also may have built-in music, mobiles, vibrators and night-lights, all designed to make parents and baby as comfortable as possible.
