Choosing clothes for your toddler doesn¡¯t have to be a difficult task-- in fact, it can even be fun! Here are 8 great tips for picking out clothes for a toddler:

1.  Don¡¯t spend a fortune. While it may be tempting to buy your toddler girl that expensive boutique dress, ask your self how many times she¡¯ll actually wear it.  Toddlers grow quickly, so if you can¡¯t justify more than one wearing, reconsider the purchase. You can also check online auction sites for gently used lots of clothing in your toddler¡¯s size. Only buy from reputable sellers (check their feedback rating before you bid).  End of the season clearance sales can be great-- if you can accurately predict what size your child will be next year at this time. 

2. Buy basics that you can mix and match. You can stretch out your toddler¡¯s wardrobe by choosing basic turtlenecks and t-shirts in popular solid colors.  Buy comfortable fitting jeans and sweat pants for every day play wear. A denim skirt is a must-have casual staple for a toddler girl, while overalls look great on both boys and girls. 

3. Size matters. You may feel that you should buy your child¡¯s pants a size larger so they will ¡°fit¡± him or her longer, but this is not always a good idea.  Toddlers, especially when they are just starting to walk, are prone to tumbling and tripping. Wearing pants that are too long will only increase the chance of your child getting hurt. Even if you cuff the pants at the bottom, they can come unraveled. Try to buy the proper size-- or put larger sized clothes aside until your child actually fits into them.  

4. If the shoe fits... you don¡¯t have to buy it! Try to avoid spending money on multiple pairs of shoes for your toddler. Toddler feet grow remarkably fast, and you will only waste money if your child has a shoe collection that rivals Imelda Marcos¡¯.  Instead, make sure that your child has one or two pairs of sneakers, a pair of dress shoes and a pair of rain or snow boots.

5. Beware of too many buttons and snaps. Clothes that are loaded with buttons and snaps are cumbersome to put on a wriggling toddler. Opt for easier, slip-on style shirts and pants that will come off easily for diaper changes.  

6. Dress for the occasion. Don¡¯t send your toddler to the play yard in a fancy dress and patent leather shoes.  And be sure that your child has the proper outwear needed for the different types of weather. 

7. Be prepared for potty training. Potty training can put a real damper on your child¡¯s wardrobe. Skip the bulky tights and one piece outfits-- they will prove to be a pain to take on and off every time your toddler has to go to the potty. Choose easy-to-pull-up pants and skirts instead. 

8. Don¡¯t call the fashion police just yet. Inevitably, the day will come that your toddler will want to help select his or her own outfits. When this happens, take a deep breath and relish in the fact that your child is showing his or her independence. Even if you cringe at the sight of plaid pants mixed with a flowered top, at least you can smile and appreciate the fact that your baby is starting to grow up.
