Why does your child need an identification (ID) card?

According to the United States Department of Justice, 80,000 children go missing every year. If ever needed, a completed identification card can immediately give authorities the vital information they may need to help them locate a missing child. Quick action is often required if a child gets abducted, so having as much information as possible about your child is very important. 

Also, if it is possible to have an identification card containing your child¡¯s information for both you and your child, it can be especially handy. For example, if your child gets lost at a grocery store or shopping mall, your son or daughter will have with him or her the ID card to be able to show a security guard or police officer your contact information.

- Local Police Departments

Many police departments across the country have fingerprint identification systems and programs for parents and caregivers to obtain ID cards for children and mentally disabled adults. Some police departments offer these services free of charge. 

- Commercial companies

There are many companies that offer do-it-yourself kits, or that will make the card for you by asking various information about your child on their websites. These services range from $10-$20 depending on the service. For example, some companies offer inclusion of DNA information and finger printing in addition to the basic ID card. If Internet access is available, try typing ¡°identification cards for children¡± into a computer search engine. This should give you a list of companies who commercially produce ID cards.

- The National Child Identification Program 

This program is a community service initiative, endorsed by the AFCA (American Football Coaches Association) and the FBI, dedicated to helping parents protect their children. The kit is $7-$10 and includes an inkless fingerprinting card, DNA collection envelope, and laminate wallet card.
