Finding the right person to photograph your wedding is a major undertaking. It¡¯s one of the most important days of your life, and you don¡¯t want to trust just anyone to document this event. Making this decision more stressful is the cost. It can run anywhere from a couple of hundred to thousands of dollars just for a few hours of picture taking. So, how do you find a reputable wedding photographer at a price you can afford? It¡¯s easier than you might think.
Most photographers who specialize in wedding photos offer certain packages. The cost of the package depends on the types of photographs you¡¯ll be buying. You¡¯ll need to decide if you want wallets, larger sizes suitable for framing, and how many photos you want in your wedding album. You also have the option of purchasing the proofs as well as albums for parents and other family members. Purchasing the negatives is always a good bet because you won¡¯t have to pay the photographer every time you need a copy of a picture, but that will raise the cost of the package considerably as most photographers will not give up negatives easily.
If you feel the photographer¡¯s packages costs too much money, or if you¡¯re not interested in paying for all those pictures, try suggesting your own package. What if you don¡¯t want wallet sized photos, yet every package includes them? What if you¡¯d rather not purchase albums for the parents? Perhaps you¡¯d like only a couple of portrait-sized photos for framing and an album full of shots highlighting the day¡¯s events? Many photographers are willing to negotiate smaller packages that aren¡¯t listed in their brochures. If you¡¯re visiting a photographer who isn¡¯t willing to negotiate, move on. Others will appreciate the business.
Be creative. You might be able to pay a cheaper rate for photography if you hire the photographer for the ceremony and some posed shots afterwards, but provide disposable cameras on each table at the reception for candid shots. (There are disposable cameras packaged specifically for this purpose.) Do the math though. It won¡¯t be such a savings if the cost of film and processing exceeds the cost of photography.
Another way to save money is to look beyond the ¡°wedding¡± section of the local Yellow Pages. Try enlisting the services of the local corner photographer. Just because they don¡¯t specifically advertise as wedding photographers doesn¡¯t mean they don¡¯t do weddings. Chances are they do, and they¡¯re a lot cheaper than those photographers that specialize in wedding photography only.
Perhaps you have a friend who dabbles in photography. That¡¯s certainly a consideration, especially if they offer to take the photographs as a gift. If you decide to go this route, there are a few details you should keep in mind. First and foremost, this person is not a professional. Is this someone you can trust to take pictures of your special day? Will the friendship be over if he takes anything less than quality photographs? Will the budding photographer be okay with photographing the festivities rather than enjoying them, or will he spend more time at the bar than he will with his camera? Once the pictures are taken, make sure you get negatives. Your friend might not want to make copies or enlargements every time you, or a relative, request one.
Always shop around for the best deal and never go with the first quote you receive. It pays to comparison shop. Some photographers may make you feel as though you need to make an immediate decision. Don¡¯t let them pressure you if you¡¯re not comfortable with your package or the photography studio. You should at least be able to sleep on it. Don¡¯t be afraid to take your business elsewhere if something doesn¡¯t sit right with you. Most of all, remember that you get what you pay for. Besides checking a photographer¡¯s portfolio, check his reputation as well. There may be a reason he or she is so cheap.
A wedding photographer is a major, but necessary expense. Finding someone affordable to take pictures of the Big Day is a lot easier than you think. Just remember: negotiate; be willing to settle for a smaller package; shop around; and look beyond the typical wedding photographer. Sure, you can spend a fortune if you¡¯re so inclined, but money saved now can mean more in the bank for the honeymoon or a new house later.
