Whether your children are going away to camp or just playing with friends at the park labeling their clothes and toys helps prevent lost belongings. Many pre-schools require that easily lost items like hats, sweaters and jackets be labeled so that harried teachers can easily match children with garments. Learn about the best ways to put your children¡¯s names on different types of items.
Clothing
The best way to label clothing and other fabric items is to use iron-on labels. Most fabric and craft stores sell rolls of iron-on strips that can be trimmed to the appropriate size, marked with a permanent fabric marker and adhered inside the clothing with a hot iron. These permanent labels are easy to use and will work with most fabric types. If you have a lot of labeling, you may want to purchase pre-printed labels. Several online and mail order companies offer iron-on labels that can be pre-printed with a name. These labels are fairly inexpensive, easy to attach and look neat and tidy. They easily withstand washing and wearing without fading.
Labels can also be sewn into clothing items, but this process is more time consuming than installing the iron-on type. Sew-in labels are also available in blank and pre-printed versions. Sew-in labels are a good back-up method for any fabrics that will not accept the iron-on adhesive, or for any item that should not be ironed, such as a backpack. Sew-in labels are also easier to remove as you pass hand-me-down clothing on to someone else to use. If you routinely pass clothing from your older children to younger ones, consider labeling items with just your family¡¯s last name so you do not have to re-label items each time a new family member inherits them.
Books and Toys
If your children take books or toys with them to school, the playground or to friends¡¯ houses, it is a good idea to label them. This ensures lost items can be returned and helps resolve any disputes over toys claimed by more than one person.
One way to label items is to create tags on a personal label-maker. A number of inexpensive labelers are on the market; they are easy to use and create small adhesive labels with any information you would like to include. These labels do not tend to be waterproof or permanent, however. So while these labels work well to quickly place a name inside a book cover or notebook, they are less useful for toys that see heavy action like a sandbox set.
For more durable labels, search online for companies that create personalized, waterproof, stick-on labels for any hard surface. These labels can go through the dishwasher or microwave without peeling or fading. They are ideal for labeling baby bottles, drink cups, lunch boxes, bicycles, helmets, pool toys and other indoor and outdoor gear.
Need a really quick way to label something and don¡¯t have any labels handy? While it is less than elegant, writing your children¡¯s name with their belonging with a fine point permanent marker is the old-fashioned and thoroughly workable solution. |
