Define

Chores have been around for as long as people have walked the earth. Knowing what chores need doing, and whose turn it is, can be simplified from the start with a list. A wipe-clean board, chalkboard in a prominent area, sent by email to each family member, whatever method works for your family, do it! Leave nothing off the list, and never assume that because someone has been doing a specific chore for some time, that it no longer needs it defining. 

Set an Example

Chores can be a struggle for us, as adults, let alone our kids, so getting them to do theirs often needs to start by example. A family is a group of two or more people, which at some point in their lives, live together under one roof. For the sake of this article, family will refer to those members that currently live together. 

A family that does chores, and does them in turn, or together, is a family who most often gets their chores done¡­Lead by example is what I am trying to get across. Every family member should have some chores to do on at least a weekly basis. Realize that some members will have more chores on their list, than others, for various reasons, including age difference, work and school schedules, needs, ability, etc.

Ownership

Some chores need to be delegated by ¡®ownership¡¯ of the chore. If your children begged, cajoled, and pleaded you into purchasing cute, little Brownie the hamster, then feeding, cleaning, and playing with Brownie on a daily basis is a chore that clearly belongs to them. If you also enjoy the furry one¡¯s friendship, add the chore to your list once in awhile to show your own acknowledgement of ownership. Children of all ages love to copy the important adults in their lives, so give them something good to mimic. Sharing ownership of certain chores, such as laundry, is another great way to show by example. 

Reward

I am not a fan of rewards given for chores done. I am in favor of praise though.  Young children respond to praise better than all the bribes you could ever hope to provide. Charts with stars or other stickers are a fantastic way to show praise and lets other children in the household strive to be fair in how well they do their own appointed chores. Make sure and put your own name and other adults in the household up on the chart too. Again, this will reinforce that everyone needs to do his or her fair share to keep the house running. What about a parent who is currently working long hours at a job, and cannot realistically keep up with some chores at home, thus getting no stars on their chart? Try to find time to sit down as a family and discuss the whole situation. Maybe a group decision to give that parent stars for on-the-job work on some weeks will keep the charts visual aspect on an even level. 

Fun

Not all chores are fun, which is life. Some chores can be livened up though, and encouragement to do so will make the time spent doing them seem like time better spent. Setting a timer in which everyone picks a chore to do, often works with young kids because they know that everyone is spending the same set time on a chore, and that means they are not missing anything. Music is a great way to lighten the mood during chores, played loud enough for all to hear is even better. 

Some kids will still whine every time the word ¡®chore¡¯ is spoken. Stick with your principles, and do not let anyone out of their chores because it seems easier than listening to them¡­once you release one child from responsibility, mutiny from the others is sure to follow.
