The centerpiece of any nursery is definitely the crib. It is no wonder that you want to decorate your baby¡¯s crib so that it is adorable and comforting for your new baby girl or boy. While you may only be thinking of how you want the crib to turn out aesthetically, you also have to have safety in mind as you decorate the crib. Here are some great tips for decorating your baby¡¯s crib.
First of all, you need to buy a crib (unless you already have one from your last baby). This undertaking may sound simple, but when you hit the stores, you will quickly find out that you have a plethora of options. There are two basic styles to choose from: traditional or convertible. You know what a traditional crib is, but you may not be familiar with the convertible models. A convertible crib allows you to basically turn the crib into a daybed for your baby when he or she is old enough for a ¡°big boy¡± or ¡°big girl¡± bed. If you want to get the most value for your buck, a convertible is the way to go. If you are sure that you will be able to get a new bed after the crib as your child gets a little older, then a traditional style crib is perfectly fine.
While convertible and traditional are the most common crib types that you will come across, there are also a few different styles, such as a rocking crib. Da Vinci sells a rocking crib called the Alpha Mini Rocking Crib that retails for about $180, and it features a rounded base that rocks like a cradle. There are also several variations on the traditional crib, such as some models that have trundle drawers and some that have a diaper-changing station attached.
If you are using an old crib rather than purchasing a new one, make sure that you thoroughly clean it and carefully inspect it for any splintering if it is wooden. You could also re-paint the crib, and you could use stencils to sponge on some designs. Stenciling is a great way to spruce up a plain-looking crib, and it is very simple. Simply decide what patterns or pictures you would like as the theme of your nursery. For example, many baby girl rooms are ballerina-themed and many baby boy rooms are sports-themed, so you could find some ballet shoe stencils or some baseball bat and hat stencils. Avoid decorating the crib with bows and ribbons because even though the chances are slim, they present a choking hazard, and where your baby is concerned, I¡¯m sure you would agree that you are always better safe than sorry.
The central focus of your crib decoration really isn¡¯t the crib itself; it¡¯s the bedding and the accessories. You are probably thinking along the lines of soft pastels, either pinks or yellows for girls usually, and greens and blues for boys. However, although these colors may be striking and adorable to you, your baby¡¯s developing vision is actually unable to see soft colors as well as bright red, black, and white. It is for this very reason that there are several crib sets that utilize these easy-to-see colors. For example, the Baby Einstein Company has an array of products exclusively in bright red, black, and white. If these colors just seem too severe for your little sweetie¡¯s nursery, you could get soft-colored linens, but opt for a red, white, and black mobile for your baby¡¯s visual stimulation and enjoyment. As you search for bunting and bedding, avoid items that have sewn on decorative accents. They may look cute, but if they get snagged on something and fall off of the bedding or bunting, they are a choking hazard. |
