When buying a car seat for your toddler there are many important things to consider.  Safety should come first; so never let your child ride in the car without one.  Your child is ready for a toddler front facing car seat after the age of one and when they have reached at least twenty pounds.

Before buying a new seat, do some research.  Look up car seat recalls on the Internet.  Make a list of recalled model brands and their model numbers.  Though retailers strive to keep recalled items from their shelves, sometimes this doesn't happen.  This is especially useful if you buy a used seat. The previous owner may not have been aware of the recall.

Use extra care if you decide to buy a used seat or take a used seat from friends or family.  Carefully check for any signs of cracking, warping or fraying.  Any of these things can render a car seat unusable.  The buckles on the seat should fasten securely and stiffly.  Sometimes there is no way to know what a seat has been through, regardless of its appearance.  Seats that have been in a crash, even if they appear fine, should be discarded.  Never buy a model that is more than five years old.  

Before you buy a seat, have your toddler sit in it to see if it's the proper fit.  The child's head should be well below the top of the seat.  The harness should fit securely over the shoulders for a safe and comfortable fit.  Ideally, the slot from which the harness comes through should be a few inches above their shoulder.  The child's legs should hang comfortably from the seat with some room to move.  The chair should be the correct size to sit at a 45-degree angle in the back seat of your vehicle.  A good tip would be to measure the area you have to work with before going in the store to make your purchase.  

Just as important as buying the proper seat for your child is making sure it is installed properly.  Four out of five car seats are installed incorrectly.  Read the instructions that come with the seat thoroughly, and follow them to the letter.  If you bought a used seat, call the manufacturer and they can supply you with the instructions.

The very best place to put your child's seat is in the back.  No child under the age of twelve should ride in the front of any vehicle.  Place the seat in the center, if possible.  If this is not possible, the back right is the next best place.

When placing the car seat in to install, press down and back on the seat cushion of the car.  Hold the seat down as you strap it in for a very tight fit.  After you have buckled the seatbelt to secure the car seat, make sure it is in the locked position so that it will not loosen while the vehicle is in motion.  Make sure all belts are laying flat and are secure.  

If you have a car made after September 2002, it is equipped with LATCH.  LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children) is an addition that helps secure the car seat to the vehicle safely.  The manual that came with your vehicle should full explain how to install the car seat using this system.

Once you have the seat installed, grab it with both hands and try to move it.  It should not move side-to-side or front to back any more than an inch.  If you find it to be loose, remove and start again.  Some communities may offer free clinics where you may go to see if your seat is installed correctly, or they will install if for you.  This is usually free of charge.
