Today's parents want the best for their babies, as evidenced by the wide variety of health and safety products available and the equally wide variety of product reviews on websites selling these products.  Parents who grew up before the widespread use of infant car seats and booster seats might now wonder how they ever survived to adulthood - and how to choose and use a car seat for their own baby.  Here's how to make sure you use your car seat correctly and install it in the safest possible way.

First of all, read the manual carefully, from assembling the seat to the manufacturer's tips for installing it in different positions or in different types of cars.  Some car seats, primarily those for the youngest infants, must be installed at a certain angle in order to provide the best protection.  Such seats will usually have an indicator that tells you if the seat is installed at the correct angle, and you may need a rolled-up towel or two to place under the seat's base in order to achieve this angle.  

If your vehicle is equipped for LATCH (Lower Anchors and Tethers for Children), as many late-model cars are, you will be able to install the seat without using the seatbelts.  Using the LATCH tether and anchor system is actually preferable to using the seatbelts, because it is more foolproof. However, mistakes can still be made, so it is still important to read the instructions in the manual closely both before and during the installation.   

The best place for the car seat is the middle of the back seat.  If this spot is not available for any reason (for instance, if the back seat is too small for passengers to sit comfortably when the car seat is installed in the middle), the next best spot is one of the side seats in the back seat.  The car seat should never be used in the front seat. 

Regardless of whether you are using the LATCH system or your vehicle's own seatbelts to install your baby's car seat, one rule universally applies: once installed, the seat should not move more than one inch when pulled from side to side or front to back.  

Making sure that the seat is installed tightly is no easy task, and the best way to tighten the belts or LATCH straps is a little awkward (but very much worth the trouble): Climb up into the seat (or the base, if installing a base to be used with a baby carrier/car seat set), putting your knee in the seat and leaning all your weight into it.  Then pull up on the belt or LATCH strap to tighten it until it cannot be tightened any further.  Get down from the seat or base and check to see if the seat moves.  If it does, repeat the above step, possibly enlisting another person to help pull up on the strap while you put your weight into the seat.  

If you are using a shoulder strap/lap belt combo to install the seat (for instance, if the seat is being installed on one of the side seats), it is important to use the car seat's locking clip to hold the lap and shoulder belts together to keep them from loosening.  The locking clip is a metal clip usually found on the back of the car seat, and your owner's manual will illustrate the proper way to use it.

Once your car seat is installed properly, check it from time to time to make sure it has not become loose or out of position.  If it has, remove it and reinstall it - it's worth the trouble.
