The holiday season is full of fun and exciting activities. There is shopping and baking to do, and friends and family to see. For your baby, however, the holiday season can become a time of stress. Babies, just like adults, can experience stress. You can do a few things to make the holidays easier for your little one.
Babies and small children tend to function better if they are kept on a schedule. This doesn¡¯t mean that you have to stick to a strict regimen of eating and naptimes, but it does mean that you need to keep in mind that your baby doesn¡¯t need a total change from his ordinary daily schedule.
If you have several days packed with activities, pay attention to when you can do these activities. If you are going a shopping trip, it might be a good idea to let your baby have his morning nap first, if he usually takes one. If he only takes an afternoon nap, try to do your shopping as early in the day as possible.
When you do shop with your child, bring along a favorite toy to keep him company in his stroller. Be sure to have plenty of snacks available if he is old enough to eat solid food. Try to keep to his feeding schedule as much as possible. It will be good for him, and for you, if you stop your shopping and feed him in a quiet area.
If you are going to be shopping for quite a while, be sure you¡¯ve brought a good stroller that can be reclined. Your baby can take his naps while you shop! Umbrella strollers that don¡¯t recline are probably not a good idea for smaller babies.
The holiday season also means being around more family and friends. New and unfamiliar faces can be overwhelming to a small child. If you take your child to a family gathering, try not to let him be passed around from person to person too much. If you do have a lot of family and friends who want to hold your little one, be sure to remain in his sight. He may be more willing to let others hold him if he knows that you are nearby.
If you are staying overnight at a relative¡¯s or friend¡¯s house, you still need to consider your baby and try to stick to as much of a schedule as possible. You will probably need a portable crib or playpen, and you need to bring a favorite blanket or toy along to comfort your child in a strange place.
Influenza, common colds, and stomach viruses are more prevalent during the holiday season as more people come in contact with each other. It is especially important to take care of your baby during this time. Try to limit his exposure to others who are sick. Make sure he gets plenty of rest and drinks plenty of fluid. Try not to introduce a number of new foods during the holidays.
Most importantly, pay attention to the actions of your baby. If he seems fussier than usual, he may need some quiet time or extra cuddle time with you. If he doesn¡¯t want to eat as much, try to find some of his favorite simple foods that he eats quite often. If he seems especially clingy at this time, indulge his attachment to you. He may be feeling insecure with all of the new people and extra activities that have been introduced into his world.
The holidays can be a wonderful time for you and your baby. You just need to choose your activities wisely, stick to as regular a schedule as possible, and be aware of your baby¡¯s extra needs.
