MAKE A SHRINE

Samhain is the time when we celebrate death as a part of the life cycle, and honor our dead. If you don¡¯t have a permanent family altar, this is an opportune time to make a shrine to honor those who have gone before us. Put up a table or clear off a shelf and put pictures and mementoes that belonged to those you knew and loved. If you don¡¯t have a photo of someone, simply write their name on a card and display it. Decorate it by laying a nice cloth down and putting candles, flowers or little crafts that the children have made. Put out a plate for offerings you may wish to place in honor of the dead. 

PASS DOWN MEMORIES

As we honor our dead, it is a time to speak their names and remember them. Tell children all you know about family members and friends who have passed on. Relay stories you have heard, or tell them your own experiences. Teach them the names of the people they came from and the struggles and triumphs of those people¡¯s lives. If they knew someone who died, allow them to relay their own memories or feelings if they wish. You might find yourselves laughing, or crying, or, quite often, both. This night can be emotionally charged and reveal powerful feelings and memories. Allow the feelings to flow and take their course. Don¡¯t make anyone feel bad for mourning, or for remembering a loved one with joy and happiness.

VISIT A GRAVEYARD

If you have family that is buried near by, this is a prime time to visit the grave. Clean it off, bring some flowers, say a few prayers or simply have a picnic and remember the spirit of the person who meant so much to you. Bring some paper and chalk to make tombstone rubbings that can be placed upon the altar. 

If you don¡¯t have any family buried near by, you may wish to choose a local cemetery and visit it. Care for any graves that look unkempt and ignored and leave some flowers or stones as an offering to the spirit of the person. Perhaps somewhere across the country, they have a Pagan relative who is doing the same for someone you knew and loved.

TALK ABOUT DEATH

Let children get out any questions, fears, or feelings they have on the topic of death. All too often in our modern culture death is somewhat of a taboo subject that makes people nervous. Even so, children are likely to have concerns and curiosities that can ideally be addressed at this time. Ask them what they think happens after death, and share your own points of view. A calm, frank discussion in light of the season can give your child the opportunity to explore this aspect of life. 

CARVE A JACK-O-LANTERN

Jack-o-lanterns are traditional holiday decorations that have a long history in Paganism. People of Northern Europe used to carve faces in gourds and light them by placing a candle inside in order to frighten away the harmful spirits of the dead who they believe roamed the earth on this night. Take the opportunity while scraping and carving a pumpkin to tell children of the real history of Halloween and the meaning of the symbols of the season. 

GAZE INTO THE FUTURE

This night above all others has been known as a time when divination practices are most powerful and accurate. Take a cauldron (even a plastic one) and fill it with water. Place a crystal within it and lower the lights in the room. Allow the children to gaze into it and clear their minds, letting them see what ideas or thoughts pop into their heads. Don¡¯t over-analyze anything that happens to come to them, or force them to talk about it. This is a prime time to get children to relax and open all of their senses.
