Churches and other spiritual congregations are adding drama as an important part of the worship service. Morality plays evolved during the Middle Ages, drawing observers to church services in great numbers. People can benefit from watching the human drama played out in a religious setting.

If you are interested in getting your church to produce a play, here are some helpful hints:

1. Organize a committee. Post an announcement in the church bulletin or newsletter inviting interested people to sign up as organizers. Indicate a certain date by which you need the signatures. After the date passes, notify everyone on the list about the first meeting. Try to set a time that will work for most folks' schedules.

2. Set an agenda. At the meeting get everyone's input about the type of tasks that need to be done, such as choose a play, recruit actors, set a rehearsal schedule and performance data, establish a budget and inquire about church funding, arrange for props and costumes, and designate a public relations person or group. Ask people to volunteer for various tasks or to recommend other church members not present who might be interested. Brainstorm for each area and list the things that need to be done.

3. After choosing the play, be sure it meets with the pastor's and church board's approval. Check local Christian bookstores for titles and themes.

4. Depending on the size of your congregation and the potential number of good actors, either invite experienced people to accept leading roles or set an audition date. 

5. When actors are selected, have the committee members (who should be meeting weekly or bi-monthly) decide whether costumes can be bought via church funding or donations, made by congregational members, or arranged by individual actors. 

6. Announce a call for stage hands, technical support, maintenance crew, and a play director or producer. Meet with those people to divide up duties and plan the performance night(s). Check the stage for a draw curtain and lighting. 

7. Rehearse frequently with the cast, ask them to memorize lines, and designate stand-in persons in case of illness. Consider bringing refreshments to practice as an incentive and reward for volunteer actors. 

8. Get the public relations team started. They will need to collect actor biographies (a paragraph or so), background information on the play, details about the church for visitors, and directions to restroom facilities as well as a refreshment notice if something will be offered. Posters, fliers, and possibly a press release will need to be crafted and distributed at various points during production. 

9. Connect the stage hands to the props subcommittee. They should start planning and obtaining minimal stage sets, backdrops, and props and decide how these will be moved on and off stage. 

10. At the final dress rehearsal, run through the entire performance in costumes without stopping, just as though you were performing it. Check for flukes and flaws while commending the cast and crew on their fine job. 

Opening night comes and the play is a smashing success. As the curtain falls on the final scene, a crescendo of applause draws the actors to the stage for a final bow. Relieved and gratified, you give thanks to God above and people on the stage for the resounding triumph of your first church play.
