Collagen injections can be used to fill in wrinkles or indentations in many parts of the body. This procedure can also smooth out your skin if you have scarring from severe acne. Unlike procedures such as a traditional face lift, collagen injections have a much shorter recovery time and are much less expensive. Although this is a simple procedure it still has risks which should be considered and discussed with your doctor before you have the procedure. As with any medical procedure, it is very important that the patient be healthy at the time they receive the injections.  The injections are done with a local anesthetic therefore allowing most patients to go home a few hours after the injections have been done providing there are no complications. 

One draw back to collagen injections is that they are not permanent. They must be repeated about every six months because the collagen is absorbed into the body. This means that it is not a one time expense. With the average cost for the procedure being about four hundred dollars, the cost is definitely something to be considered. Another thing to consider is that this procedure is considered cosmetic surgery and therefore most health insurance plans do not cover the cost. 

There might be some minor discomfort after the procedure. There may be redness at each place where the injection was given but this should only last a few hours. Some bruising can occur but should only last a few hours to a few days. Minor discomfort such as irritation, swelling, stinging, and soreness can occur. Ice packs can be applied to the areas that are sore to reduce swelling and help with the pain. If you have a great deal of discomfort or pain that is severe enough that it requires pain medication, discuss with your doctor which pain reliever is best. Ibuprofen or products that contain ibuprofen should not be taken after collagen injections unless your doctor advises it for pain.

There are some more serious complications that are possible that should be considered. Some people may have an allergic reaction to the collagen. This can be very serious depending on the severity of the reaction. Symptoms of an allergic reaction are hives, headache, and severe swelling. It is important to have an allergy test before you have collagen injections.  

Other possible but rare conditions that may occur are infections and abscesses. Although these problems are rare they should be seriously considered before your procedure.  

As with any procedure, if you are pregnant you should discuss with your doctor the risks of collagen injections during pregnancy. Your doctor may advise you to put off the procedure until you deliver your baby. 

After the collagen injections are complete you can go back to your normal schedule very quickly. You can apply makeup if you wish. You should always apply sun block since sun damage can cause wrinkles and lines. Discuss with your doctor when you should go back to work. As the swelling goes down and the slight bruising fades you are sure to love your youthful new look.
