An infant stroller, carriage, or perambulator--whatever you choose to call it--provides momentum for baby and movement for Mom or Dad. Most children enjoy cruising around the mall or the park, pushed by a parent who likewise enjoys the exercise or fresh air. 

But to keep this activity safe and enjoyable, parents need to check the equipment on a routine basis to be sure it works properly and will not lead to an accident. Here are some things to look for when checking over your baby's stroller:

1. Start with the handle bar. Is it solidly attached and stable? Does it appear rusted? Are bolts secure and tight? Is there any evidence of crookedness or deterioration? If any of the above is apparent, you may need to replace this piece or buy another stroller, depending on the extent of the damage.

2. How does the seat or body area look? Is it mounted securely? Does it set evenly on the framework? Can the seat be adjusted from reclining to upright smoothly, or does it jar, scrape, or stick between levels? Is the seat padding torn, and if so, is the stuffing coming out to pose a choking hazard if the baby puts some in his mouth? Is the seatbelt in good shape and does it fit snugly around the baby without risk of asphyxiation if the child slips down while in it?

3. Examine the underside or floorboard (depending on the make and style of your stroller). Will it hold the child's feet or is there a chance they will spill over into open areas alongside and scrape the ground? Will the area grow cramped as your little one grows? Is this section secured by snaps, rods, or another type of structure to keep it from bending, folding, or ripping? 

4. Watch the wheels as the carriage moves. Do they turn in unison? Are any of them wobbly? Are they in danger of coming off or going flat? Are the screws or axle rusting? Do they need to be greased for greater ease of movement? Make sure they are bolted securely to avoid problems if they run over a rough place. 

5. Look at the accessories. Is there an adjustable sun visor that works? Can it be flipped back and forth to adjust to the various positions of sunlight during the day? Is there a mobile to entertain an irritable child? Will it fall down or come apart to choke a toddler? Are there other accoutrements that need to be checked, such as a feeding tray, bottle holder, or metal toy rack on the back? 

While this may sound like a lot of work, it should only take a few minutes to look over your baby's transportation. Be sure it folds smoothly if you put it in the car or closet. Check padding or covers for signs of mold or tears. If your model has a brake, test it every so often to be sure it still works as it should. Wipe your stroller clean after each use to keep it neat and sanitary. Then every outing will be fun and safe!
