Having a new baby is a big change in anyone¡¯s life. A baby is a source of joy for its parents and offers to its parents many new and exciting experiences. Along with a new baby come many new skills that a parent must learn in order to properly care for an infant. One of these skills is learning how to properly burp an infant.
There are several ways to burp a baby. As far as technique is concerned, there is no right or wrong way to go about burping an infant. What makes one way right and the others wrong will vary from baby to baby. Each baby is different and parents must try different methods of doing the same thing to find out what works best for them and their new baby.
One way to burp a baby is over your shoulder. This is the most well known way for burping. It is recommended that you place a burp cloth or other material over your shoulder prior to positioning the baby. This will protect your clothes should the baby spit up. Gently hold the baby upright against you with his or her head resting on your shoulder. Use one hand to support the baby on its bottom and use the other hand to gently tap on the baby¡¯s back. You can either do this in the same place or another way that works is moving your hand up the baby¡¯s back as you tap and then repeating. Repeat until the baby burps.
A second way of burping a baby is having the baby sit in your lap. Since new babies can not sit unsupported, this position requires a unique way of supporting the baby. Sit the baby in your lap facing the side and lean the baby forward slightly, supporting the baby¡¯s weight with your hand placed under his or her chin. You may wish to place a burp cloth or other cloth in the baby¡¯s lap to protect against spitting up. Then as in the previous method, tap the baby¡¯s back either in one place or with the upwards motion. Continue until the baby burps.
The third way to burp a baby is to lay the baby across your lap. This method will put pressure on the baby¡¯s tummy which will also help to expel the gas in their tummy. Using this method, you can either rub the baby¡¯s back or tap on the baby¡¯s back like the other two methods. Be sure to protect both your lap and the floor against spitting up. Spit up is not the easiest thing to clean out of clothes or carpeting.
Knowing when to burp a baby can be a tricky thing for new parents, but with a little practice, a parent will learn to watch for the baby¡¯s signals. One definite time to burp a baby is while feeding. It is recommended that if you are bottle-feeding, to burp the baby after every couple of ounces. If you are breastfeeding, you should burp the baby before switching sides. You should also burp your baby at the end of the feeding. Some babies will only burp at the end of a feeding, but you should try anyways, just in case. Another time to burp a baby is if the baby is crying out from discomfort. Sometimes babies will get gas trapped in their little tummies and burping them can help alleviate that gas.
Having a new baby will elicit many changes in a family¡¯s daily life. Learning to properly burp a baby and knowing when to do it is one of those adjustments that must be made. The only way to determine which way works best for you and your baby is to try each one. Trial and error is a big part of parenthood. |
