Having a new baby requires parents to keep things as safe and healthy as possible for their vulnerable young one. One of the most important things for a parent to do is to keep the things with which a baby eats as clean and sanitary as possible. Especially for those who bottle feed their babies, this is even more so important.
When purchasing new baby bottles, some people assume that these bottles come in the packages clean and are ready for direct use. This is not so. There is residue from the factory environment that is better to be washed off. Adults can tolerate this residue, but it is not safe for infants. The first thing that should be done with the bottles and nipples alike is to wash them well in warm, soapy water. Be careful to rinse them thoroughly. After they have been properly washed, prior to their first use, it is recommended to boil them to sterilize them. To do this, fill a pot with water and immerse the bottles along with all their parts in the water. Proceed to boil the water and allow it to boil for about 10-15 minutes. Then remove them from the water and allow them to dry.
Bottles generally only require being sterilized completely prior to their first use. It is recommended to re-sterilize the nipples at regular intervals. This is because this is the point of contact for the baby and more likely to carry and spread germs to the baby.
Once the bottles have gone into use, it is important to maintain good care with them. After the baby has eaten, it is important to dispose of any portion that the baby did not drink and then thoroughly rinse the bottle. This will help keep the bottles from becoming rotten and will make for easier washing. You do not need to wash the bottle immediately, but rinsing it out will prevent problems later on.
When washing the bottles, there are two ways to do this. Most bottles are dishwasher safe and can be put on the top rack of the dishwasher to be washed. If you do not have a dishwasher or would rather wash the bottles by hand, they sell bottle brushes specifically for baby bottles. These brushes come in quite handy since it is nearly impossible to reach inside the bottle without one. Bottles should be rinsed thoroughly after washing to prevent any soap residue from being ingested by the baby. It is also best to allow the bottles to air dry. There are also special drying racks that can be bought for baby bottles.
Nipples for baby bottles should be sterilized frequently and replaced at first sign of wear. Using nipples that begin to discolor or become brittle is not only dangerous as a potential choking hazard, but can also pass somewhat harmful bacteria on to the baby. You should also check nipples for leaks frequently as too much of a flow can also cause a baby to choke. You can check the flow and also for leaks by running water through the nipple and watching how it exits.
A bottle is a baby¡¯s main source of nutrition and it needs to be properly taken care of. Parents need to make sure that each feeding is a healthy experience for their child by making sure that the bottles are clean and well maintained. The parents are a child¡¯s only hope for keeping him or her safe and healthy. |
