Bringing a baby into the world is one of life¡¯s best experiences.  Parents have the amazing opportunity to witness someone else grow up.  Along the way no mother or father can resist the chance to document their child¡¯s life.  Most parents love to take as many photographs as possible.  While it¡¯s nice to have pictures for all kinds of occasions, there are several that no parent should miss.   

At the top of any parent¡¯s wish list are pictures of their baby in the hospital.  Countless hospitals offer their maternity patients a package of professionally shot pictures.  Some parents opt to use this offer.  Others may decide to shoot pictures on their own.  If you fall into the latter category there are a few great photos you¡¯ll want to take.  An important picture is a close up of the newborn baby.  You can shoot her sleeping or wide awake.  Another terrific picture is a shot of the baby in her mother¡¯s arms.  Most mothers bring a nice nightgown to the hospital just for this very purpose.  In addition to mommy and baby shots, every parent will want pictures of their baby in grandma and grandpa¡¯s arms.  Set up a nice chair with a good lighting for a shot your own parents will adore.  If this isn¡¯t your first child, make sure you get a picture of the new baby with your other children.  Small children can wary around babies so consider shooting the older sister or brother next to the newborn rather than directly holding her.  

Another great series of shots for the album is when the baby comes home for the first time.  You can have pictures of the baby in the bassinette, the crib and the rocking chair.  Once your child starts to grow up it¡¯s very nice to have photographs for your album to show off every developmental milestone.  The first time your child sits up, set him on the floor and get a good close up of his latest ability.  Once he¡¯s progressed to standing up take pictures of him with his brand new shoes. Another terrific occasion for picture taking is a child¡¯s first birthday.  Get pictures of the child next to the birthday cake, opening presents and greeting relatives and friends.  A wonderful portrait during a first birthday is a photo of all the child¡¯s friends together.  Line them up on a couch and have parents in easy reach so any small children will be more cooperative.  You may also want one of the friends and their parents.  A group picture against a neutral background is very nice.  Use a digital camera so you can email copies to everyone in the picture.

In addition to his birthday, your child will probably attend a religious ceremony in his honor.  Lots of Christians practice infant baptism.  This is a fabulous time to dress your child up and show him off.  If your church does not allow picture taking during the ceremony you can always take pictures of the child outside on the grounds.  You can also take pictures of the child before you leave.  A very lovely picture for any photo album is of an infant in baptism day finery held by delighted relatives.  Jews celebrate the arrival of a boy with a Bris or circumcision ceremony.  After the ceremony is performed many parents hold a party in the child¡¯s honor. This is great time to take lots of pictures.  A particularly fine idea for a photograph is a shot of the rabbi and the father holding the child. A Jewish girl¡¯s birth is often celebrated with a naming ceremony.  A beautiful picture for any album is a close up of the baby next to the inscribed parchment with the details of why her name was chosen.  

In addition to specific religious ceremonies centered around the arrival of a baby, many families also celebrate religious holidays.  A baby¡¯s first Christmas can be a wonderful time to take pictures.  Buy an ornament commemorating the occasion and take a picture of your child holding it next to the tree.  Other great shots of the time may include your child eating Christmas cookies or playing with wrapping paper and tinfoil. Your child¡¯s babyhood will pass quickly.  Take great photographs of the most important times in her early life and you¡¯ll have a beautiful keepsake you can cherish long after she¡¯s grown up.
