A Christmas tree is probably one of the most nostalgic and memorable decorations remembered from year to year.  Chances are school and church activities resulted in additions to the ornaments or tree trimming d¨¦cor and each year, as that ornament is unwrapped from its tissue enclosure, the memories come flooding back.  Many young children, and the young-at-heart, can remember an afternoon spent under the tree¡¯s boughs as they were permitted to help set up the model train and a surrounding village.  Hours of candy cane induced dreams and wishes came from that train set and may have sparked a hobby that is still enjoyed today.  To bring back those feelings or introduce a new generation to the model train world, try decorating a tree this year with a model train theme.

Get the entire family involved with decorating by talking about their favorite Christmas memories ¨C hopefully a model train will fall into someone¡¯s recitation.  Visit some Christmas themed stores or toy stores and they¡¯ll certainly have model trains set up for viewing or entertaining to get everyone in the mood.

Begin your tree with the basic coloring of the railroad; red, black, green and white.  These colors fit in well with the Christmas theme and can be carried throughout your entire house d¨¦cor.  String lights of these colors throughout the tree.  Keep the size of the bulb in proportions to fit your large or small tree.  Don¡¯t forget to tuck a few lights in between branches to show off hard to see ornaments. 

Then add some of these ornament and trimming ideas ¨C homemade or purchased:

Set up a new or old model train and/or village under the tree; include some Christmas themed boxcars.  A car full of evergreens, boxes labeled as holiday lights, candy or Santa suits, or ice boxcars that are coming from the North Pole.

Cook and decorate train shaped gingerbread cookies.  Create a length of train to hang as ornaments or just the engine shape to add to Santa¡¯s cookie plate.

Insert odd sized or individual boxcars, with or without track pieces, between the branches of the tree and highlight with the lights.  Even stuffed toy trains can be used in is manner.

Use doll furniture or miniature luggage pieces and trunks strung together as a tree chain.

Use small red and green lanterns or whistles as ornaments.

Create black and white railroad crossing signs from construction paper and string together as a chain or use individual crossing signs as ornaments.

Print out a local train schedule to sit on the same table as a small tree.  Add a few more stops to the list for fun such as Gingerbread City, Peppermintville and, of course, the North Pole.

Finally, remember safety with decorating.  A model train themed tree is guaranteed to attract the very young visitors during the holidays.  Be certain they know what they can touch and what can only be viewed.  Don¡¯t forget the pets either, those twinkling lights and fancy ornaments are sometimes too irresistible so keep the pets far away.
