Spring break is a popular time for students of all ages and denominations to head out into the world of community service. Each year, thousands of students partake in week-long mission trips, otherwise known as Alternative Spring Breaks.

Depending on abilities, interests and access, students generally choose between several different types of mission trips. Below is an overview of some of the most popular opportunities.

1. Work with Children

Working with children is one of the most popular selections for mission trip. Students will be invited into classrooms and after-school programs to serve as mentors for a week. The students will be invited to read, tutor and play with children of all ages and dispositions. The experience is equally rewarding ¨C as the children as well as the students partake in a relationship of learning and understanding. 

In addition to actually working with children for a week, students will be asked to prepare a class room or after school activity for the children. This activity requires skill and knowledge of the age group they are working with and can be fun for a group to come up with. 

Often, schools will set aside this week as a subject-focused week each year, anticipating the involvement of mission students. Schools can use the time to teach children about canoeing, ending the week with a canoe trip down a local river. They can teach about product manufacturing, ending the week with a field trip to a local production plant. 

In any event, choosing to work with children for the week-long mission trip is one of the most popular and rewarding selections.

2. Work with Homeless

Many students choose to spend their week-long mission trip working with the homeless. While there are homeless in every part of the country, the majority of these mission trips are centered around cities on the east coast, such as Philadelphia, New York and Washington, DC.

Typically, students will work through a local organization that will set up a week-long program for the students. For example, students will be invited to visit locations around the town where homeless congregate to receive goods such as blankets and coats. 

Students can also travel with a food bank, dropping off hot coffee and dinners at well-known locations where the homeless know they can meet the food bank for a meal. Many times, students will also be invited to prepare meals, such as sandwiches and snacks, for the food bank drop-off.

3. Work with Illness

Illness and Mental Illness are also popular mission trip causes. Students can sign up to work either with a specific organization or cause, depending on the arrangements with their local school or church. 

When working with mental illness, students generally will visit a hospital or establishment where mentally ill patients live or visit. Often, local churches will arrange one night a week for local mentally ill community members to socialize and play games. Mission trip students will be invited to these nights to serve as special guests. They will serve food, visit with regulars and participate in the activities. 

When mission trip students work with general illness, they can choose from specific causes, such as AIDS or Diabetes, or they can select to work in a hospital or nursing home. Generally, students will be invited to work on fundraising projects and health-related projects, such as nutrition awareness or a food distribution program. 

4. International Work

Many students enjoy spending their spring break mission trips overseas, where they can have the opportunity to travel to an entirely foreign environment and make a difference. Popular destinations include Africa, the Caribbean and parts of Latin America. 

International mission work in these parts of the world include poverty, health issues and disaster relief, such as hurricane clean-up. Normally, students will stay with local families or in tents for the duration of their spring break, so they should be prepared to ¡°rough it.¡±

While the international mission trips tend to be more expensive, they are also incredibly rewarding and can serve as a real eye-opener to students who have not encountered the ways of life of another culture.
