Your child is slowly creeping up to her second birthday. Every single day, it seems like she learns something new, whether it is learning how to color within the lines in her new coloring book or learning that she should not touch the stove when Mommy or Daddy is cooking. Her wobbly run has turned into a fast and solid run and her speech and vocabulary are improving on a daily basis. What new developments can you expect out of your twenty-two month old?

By now, she is learning to speak several words and should have about twenty words in her vocabulary arsenal, the most prevalent being ¡°No.¡± Granted, when she is hungry, more than likely she will say something along the lines of ¡°Hungry now!¡± as opposed to ¡°Mother, I am ravenous. When is dinner served?¡± She is starting to string words together to make basic sentences, so help her along by showing her the correct way to say things. For instance, if she says ¡°Me hungry!¡± you can gently say ¡°I am hungry¡± so she knows the correct way to phrase it. By continuing your nightly bedtime story rituals, her vocabulary and grasp of the language will grow by leaps and bounds, as you point out new objects to her and have her repeat them to you.

She is starting to make a transition from frustrated to inquisitive. Before, when she could not figure out a toy, she would simply throw it across the room in frustration. Now, she is starting to look at the toy as a challenge to be solved as opposed to an object that makes her mad. She will, more than likely, begin to ask for your help in figuring these things out, so be supportive in her curiosity quest. Expect tons of questions from her as her analytical minds starts wondering about things like why the sky is blue or why birds can fly and humans can¡¯t. 

As she has found her voice, now she is more than ready to use it. You may begin to notice that she has started to loudly voice her opinion. For instance, if she wants to be fed, she wants you to drop everything you are doing and feed her...now. She may scream ¡°Hungry NOW!¡± at you until you stop what you are doing and start preparing her meal. As she has been doing in the past, she is simply testing to see how far she can go with you and others around her. 

The logical part of her brain is starting to work overtime. She is just beginning to understand basic logic. For example, whereas before she only knew she was not supposed to touch the iron or ironing board because you told her not to, now she is starting to grasp the fact that she should not touch the iron because it may be hot and cause her pain. 

As your child becomes more and more mobile, she is learning to climb and run. By this time in her life, the crib may just be too tiny for her. You may find her attempting to climb out the top when she is supposed to be taking a nap. You may want to research and invest in a larger child¡¯s bed for her. However, with an easy-to-get-out-of bed now, your child will probably make nighttime visits to your bedroom a habit.
