Maintaining a healthy weight is hard for adults, but it can be just a difficult for a child. We all hear that proper nutrition and exercise are they right way to go but with video games and television it can be hard to motivate kids to get out off of the couch and convince them to enjoy a physical activity. The best strategy is of course to start emphasizing health early on. But it is never too late to begin implementing health conscious rules in a household. Start with exercise because it is easier to change a sedentary routine than it is to change what they like to eat.
1) Less screen time: The most important rule of all is to limit a child¡¯s access to television and other screen-time activities such as video games and movies, and for the technology savvy child, computer games and chat time. Unlimited access to such activities promotes a sedentary lifestyle, which will have bad results for a child¡¯s heart as well as their weight. Childhood lifestyle tendencies are likely to carry over into adulthood, so start now. The best way to go about implementing such changes is to sit down and have a family meeting where you establish new screen-time rules. For example, let them know there will be no more screen time before dinner, or that they can only watch one video a day. Make sure that everyone in the house, including adults, follows these rules.
2) Group exercise: Find activities that the family can do either in pairs or as a group. Make time for these activities at least once a day for at least thirty minutes. Do this at least five or six days a week, but everyday is, of course, best. The whole family can go for nature walks, hikes, bike rides or a good swim. Signing up for a family membership at a nearby gym is also a good idea. At least once a week try to organize a family competitive activity such as a baseball or soccer game. Competition will encourage the children to work harder at their exercise. Reward the family for working and playing together, just not with sweets.
3) Variety: Kids are interested in so many things that their attention will probably never stay with just one activity. Keep plenty of options available to them. Even if they say they are tired of biking, try taking them to a biking trail in a new area, maybe one with a course of hills or rough terrain to simulate mountain biking. Make up a new game in the swimming pool, or change the rules of an old one. Take a drive on the weekends to a hiking trail or some new location to give the kids and yourself a change of scenery. Exposure to variety will help kids learn what kinds of physical activities they love to do.
4) The more the merrier: Encourage the kids to invite their friends to come along. They are more likely to enjoy themselves when they are in the company of someone they like to spend time with. They will probably even want to swim, bike or hike for a longer period of time if there is someone along.
5) Walk the pet: If all else fails, make dog walking a daily chore that they must do for at least 30 minutes every day before dark. If they don¡¯t do it, they don¡¯t get TV time after dinner. |
