Parents have the enormous task of raising a healthy, smart and well-adjusted child.  Most of the time they have to be somewhat in control or there is chaos in the home.  But there are some things they don¡¯t have to control all of the time.  When you are a mother or father with children of any age you have to be flexible.  There are some things you can negotiate and clothing is one of them.  

When should you let children pick out their own clothes?  

This question is one that pops up for many mothers.  I think when a child can tell you they want to choose their outfit they are ready to start selecting their own clothes.  Offering assistance is a good idea but let them be in control of the final selection.  This may be hard at first especially if you do not agree with what they decide to wear, but if it is not going to hurt anything why not let them make the choice?

We all have seen kids at the grocery store or in play groups that are dressed in mismatched clothing from head to toe and I am sure you have vowed never to let your child go out in public like that.  The only problem is your child is going to want to choose their own outfits at some point and you are going to have to decide if you are going to let them express themselves the way they want.  In my opinion you need to pick your battles, and if there is room for negotiation take advantage of it.  Most mothers are constantly telling their children what they can and cannot do, so if you have a chance to let them do what they want to do, then snatch the moment because they are few and far between.  If your child is going to be playing in the yard with friends there is no reason they cannot wear the outfit they want to wear.  If you are going somewhere that is important or clothing needs to be appropriate for the occasion then make a deal with your child that if they wear the outfit you selected then when they get home they can change into the clothing they prefer.  

If you are going to teach your child to be independent and self-sufficient you are going to have to let them start making some of their own decisions.  Why not let clothing selection be one of them?  Nothing is bad is going to happen if your child has on a green pants, a bright orange shirt and a red hat.  Allowing them to make their own decisions can help them develop a sense of individuality and aid in boosting self-esteem. 

As your child gets older you can teach them about colors and color combinations.  Fashion and style will come as they develop and become more social.  The peer influence will set in at an early age and they will develop their own fashion sense and style depending on the trends.  Their taste in clothing might not be the same as yours so brace yourself and condition yourself early to accept their choices.  Wearing mismatched clothing will be the least of your problems as you child grows and enters their teenage years.
