When you are babysitting, it is important that you keep focused on the children. The parents are not paying you to sit in their home and do your homework, chat with your boyfriend, or watch their television. They are paying you to care for their children. Aside from making sure that the children are safe, fed, clean, and do their chores, it is your job to keep them occupied.
It is not just for the children¡¯s sake, but to your benefit as well, to keep their hands and minds constantly busy. When you give them something interesting and fun to do, they will not grow bored. When children have nothing to do from you, they begin to seek out activities you may not want them doing. By keeping them interested in a constructive activity, you are distracting them and preventing them from doing something destructive.
The best thing to do is to plan activities ahead of time, based on the ages, gender, and interests of the child. When you are offered the babysitting job, or a day or two before, you should ask the parents if the child has any particular interests. If possible, try to bring something to fuel that interest. Go to the library and get a couple of children¡¯s books to bring with you. Take a game along, or an old toy of your own your mother may have stashed away in the garage (just make sure it is safe and appropriate for the child¡¯s age).
If you babysit regularly for one or a few families, it pays to have your own babysitting ¡°bag of tricks¡± that you can bring and pull out whenever the children are at a loss for something to do. You can probably find, either in your own house or from a friend or relative who had a child, some old toys, puzzles, books, coloring books, finger puppets, music CDs, videos or DVDs, and games to have on hand.
Another thing that will help you to entertain children is to learn fun things, such as how to make animals out of balloons or by folding paper. Magic tricks with cards, coins, or simple household items can also be very entertaining for children. Learn how to be an exceptional story teller, by making funny voices or motions. The internet can probably provide you with a constant source of new children¡¯s songs or hand games to play.
Whatever activities you choose, be sure to keep things under control. Don¡¯t allow children to get out of hand in their excitement and become rowdy or too noisy. If an activity proves to be too stimulating for a child, try to divert their attention with something quieter. Be firm and let them know that you will not stand for wild behavior, and such behavior will only result in ending that particular activity.
Remember; a good babysitter should not only be liked by parents, but by the children as well. The more the children like you, respect you, and enjoy your company, the easier it will be to handle them when the parents are out. |
