Long days at work, sitting, meeting, talking or typing, can drain the energy even from the well rested among us. Try a few of these easy tricks to keep you energized, awake, and functioning productively.
The mere scent of peppermint or citrus will increases your blood flow. Keep hard candies close at hand for a quick treat, scented lotions for a lasting aroma or flavored tea bags for a warm taste during the down times.
Drink cold water. This wakes up the sedentary muscles and gets them moving again. An added benefit; drinking cold water increases fat burning potential as it requires more calories and energy to get that water to body temperature.
Massage your ear lobes ¨C really. Take the earrings off and massage your lobes between you thumb and index finger for a good 30 seconds. The nerve endings in your earlobes, as well as the rush of blood will increase your thought processes. Go ahead, close your eyes while you massage.
Create a code word with a friend such as ¡°blue.¡± When either of you call, leave a message or e-mail with that word the other person must contact back with a funny tale, story or joke. The secret smile, the fun and the social interaction will brighten things up instantly.
Take a stroll in the sunlight to increase your natural antidepressants. Dopamine, endorphins and other chemicals of the brain kick into high gear with the combination of sunlight and motion. The affect can last up to five hours. Skip the burgers and fries, grab an apple and walk the blues away.
Brighten up the area with lights and sunlight. Open the curtains, lift the shades, add a few lamps with full-spectrum light bulbs, and let the sun in.
Stare at something red. The color is an instant pick-me-up, as it energizes and increases adrenaline, heart rate and blood pressure. Though red flowers are ideal for their ¡°red¡± power, their scent and the sentiment, anything red will do, a handbag, a sweater or even a piece of construction paper.
Buy a dozen carnations and hand one out to each person that makes you smile. It¡¯s amazing how grateful and happy a person can be with the unexpected gift of one flower. You¡¯ll feel on top of the world for the small gesture.
Turn on the radio, loud; find your favorite song and dance to the entire thing. Simply moving around, enjoying a beat and rhythm will improve your outlook.
Breath deeply. Inhale until your lungs are full and hold the breath for a count of three. Exhale pushing the remaining air from your lungs even after you think the breath is gone. The added oxygen will increase blood flow and kick start your brain.
Reclaim your childhood by purchasing and playing with that novelty toy. Bring a yo-yo and try to ¡°walk the dog¡± during lunch. Blow soap bubbles but be willing to share the wand. See if the superball can reach the roof, or try your luck with the hoola-hoop again ¨C you¡¯ve got the hips now!
