Location: Home > family > Installing a child safety fence to keep kids safely away from a swimming pool
Swimming pools are a very popular way to help keep cool on those hot summer days. As refreshing as they are, pools can also be very dangerous. Children can easily drown in a pool that is unprotected. It takes as little as five minutes for a child to wander away from you, find the pool, and drown. In the states of California, Florida, and Arizona in the United States, drowning is the number one cause of death in children ages five and under. In Australia, it is the number one cause of death for kids aged one to four years.
Safety fences are recommended for anyone with a swimming pool, even those without children. Fencing is extra protection in addition to your pool covering. Neighboring children may wander into your yard and head straight for your pool. Most towns and cities have their own regulations that you must follow. Having a pool without proper safety fencing can lead to expensive fines. Check locally to find out what specifications you must go by when installing your fence.
There are plenty of self-install kits that you can buy to install your own fence. Follow the instructions included without taking any short cuts. If you have problems, call a professional installer to assist you. Safety should always come before cost. Below are some tips to help your pick out and install the correct fence to keep your pool safe and secure.
- It is best to completely surround your pool with fencing, completely cutting it off from the house, garage and yard. The more isolated the pool, the safer it is.
- Fencing should be, at a minimum, four feet tall. This is high enough to keep curious toddlers from climbing over and going into the pool.
- Fencing should be away from all things that can be used to climb over it. Keep away from trees, large rocks, or anything else that can be used to help a child climb.
- Choose a fence that is made of material that does not have natural footholds. Chain link can easily be scaled. Instead opt for the mesh type of fence. Choose a mesh that is bordered. This keeps it from unraveling and sagging. The best material for pool fence is polyester. Polyester is nearly impossible to rip or breach, even for an adult.
- If you chose to use wood slats for your fence, make sure they are installed vertically so they are not climbable.
- Do not allow any type of decorative hole in the fence that is larger than four inches in diameter. It is best to not have this type of decoration at all, as it can be used as a foothold for a small child to climb over the fence.
- Be sure that the bottom of the fence is flush with the deck or your yard. A space no larger than four inches is recommended to prevent children from climbing underneath to reach the pool.
- Any gates or doors leading to the pool should be installed to swing outward.
- Use self-locking and self-latching gates. This will lessen the chances of someone forgetting to lock the gate.
- Have a maximum of thirty inches between supporting posts. This will keep your fence strong and prevent sagging.
- Have locks at least four feet above the ground so small children cannot reach them.
- Consider having an alarm system installed in addition to the locks. This will instantly warn you if the gate has been opened.
- Check the fence over carefully and often after installation. Be sure that it is safe and secure. Proper maintenance is just as important as proper installation. If you have any concerns, consult a professional.
