You¡¯re best friend¡¯s birthday is coming up, and you¡¯re not sure what to give her, especially since payday is still several days away. You would like to send your mother something nice for Mother¡¯s Day, but your family is on a very strict budget. What do you do? You don¡¯t want to seem ¡°cheap¡± by buying something obviously very inexpensive, but the reality is, that is all you can afford. Here are some ideas that will help you to choose a gift that is both inexpensive and classy.
1. Put some colorful packets of seeds in a small clay pot, and then wrap the whole thing with cellophane and add lots of ribbon. Many times, the perception of a gift starts with what is on the outside, and you can definitely make a good impression by doing a classy job wrapping paper.
2. For a needle worker, buy a skein of undyed wool yarn and several packages of Kool-Aid. Include instructions on how to dye the yarn, which you can find at the yarn store or by doing an Internet search. Yarn dying is all the rage with knitters and crocheters!
3. Make truffles. The only thing you will need to buy is a bag of chocolate chips, a carton of whipped cream and some cocoa. For about five dollars and an hour or two of your time, you can give the most luxurious candy on earth!
4. Go to your local thrift shop and find an antique teacup. Fill it with a variety of teabags, and maybe even an old silver spoon, if you are lucky enough to find one!
5. Take a favorite picture of the kids to a photo shop to have it made into a 5 x 7 or 8 x 10. Inexpensive frames abound. Frame the picture and give it to a proud grandparent or aunt.
6. Buy something fun like a puzzle or stuffed animal for someone who is young at heart. They will be so busy having fun with the novelty of the gift, chances are, they won¡¯t even consider the price. If you buy a stuffed animal, consider personalizing it by having it hold a piece of the person¡¯s favorite candy, or a paperback novel that they would enjoy. You can also get a little crazy and buy a kids lunchbox and fill it with forbidden treats that the person would love to have, but has been waiting for an excuse to eat.
7. Give the gift of a subscription to a magazine that the person would enjoy. Some very classy magazines only cost twelve dollars for an entire year¡¯s subscription. Most of these magazines cost four or five dollars each month at the stand. This is one of those gifts that keeps on giving.
8. Buy a blank book and some colored pencils. Adults and children alike will enjoy this gift. Blank books can be found at almost any store, and range in price from the dollar bin to a hundred bucks for a leather one. Go for the dollar bin. Those books were probably fifteen dollars a few months ago.
9. Buy a city map, and put one sticker where the recipient¡¯s house is located, and another where your house is located. Enclose an invitation to dinner in the map. Tie the whole thing up nicely with a bow.
10. Go to garage sales and thrift stores on a regular basis. Whenever you see a nice glass pitcher, buy it. When you want to give someone a nice gift, fill up the pitcher with a fresh bouquet of flowers. Generally speaking, some of the nicest glassware has been pre-owned. There is no stigma at all associated with giving someone a hand-blown pitcher from pre-war Poland. Get to know quality glassware, because you can always find a great deal on it if you are looking and lucky.
Don¡¯t forget the details. Make sure to include a handwritten card or note with your gift, and always use nice wrapping paper or gift bags. Keep your eye out when you are shopping for sales on ribbons, wrapping paper and tissue paper. When you see a good deal, buy it. If you are trying to be frugal, it can be very frustrating to spend as much money on last minute gift bags and their accessories as you have on the gift! Also, recycle gift bags. Every time you receive one, remove the tag and store it with the rest of your supplies.
Wrap your gift artfully, and the recipient will no doubt be pleased with the creative effort that your gift shows. Sometimes, the necessity to be frugal can cause us to give more thoughtful gifts than we would otherwise, since anyone can buy a gift card. Thoughtfulness is always impressive.
