Purchasing a used car rather than a new car will save you thousands of dollars in the long run. A good used vehicle with low miles has a considerably smaller price tag than a brand version of the same vehicle. Used cars are of course lower in cost, but you still need to take the right steps to ensure the amount you are paying is fair.
When shopping for a pre-owned vehicle, one factor to take into consideration is the warranty. Warranties on used vehicles are usually very limited. They are limited to the number of days they are in effect as well as the components they cover. Used vehicle warranties are not nearly as comprehensive as new vehicle warranties. This can cost you hundreds or even thousands of dollars if the car you buy ends up having mechanical problems.
Extended warranties are usually offered for an additional sum when purchasing a used vehicle. The price of an extended warranty can be quite costly, but keep in mind that it is negotiable just like the price of the vehicle itself. If you¡¯re not satisfied with the price you are quoted for an extended warranty, make it clear that this will be a deal breaker. Chances are the salesperson will try to negotiate an acceptable price, or offer you something comparable to gain your business.
Pay close attention to the condition of the tires when purchasing a used vehicle. Used vehicle often are equipped with worn tires or tires that do not go with that particular vehicle. Tires are usually cleaned and polished to look like new, so make sure you examine the tread carefully. Keep in mind that new tires can be quite expensive. If you have to replace the tires shortly after purchasing the vehicle, this is like adding on hundreds more to the total cost of that vehicle. If you are not satisfied with the condition of the tires, let the salesperson know. They will usually try to meet your needs if you bring these concerns to their attention. After the final papers are signed, it will be too late.
Research the market value of the vehicle you want before going to the used car dealer. Make a copy of your findings, and take it with you. More often than not, consumers are not properly informed on the vehicles they are shopping for. Show the salesperson you are an informed consumer. You are more likely to get a better deal if you are holding the facts in your hand.
Buying a used car from an individual can usually save more money than buying from a used car dealer. Cars sold at a dealership are priced to cover a lot of overhead costs. Besides the commission earned by the salesperson, there is the expense of paying other employees including service personnel, office personnel, and many other people required to run the business. These costs are of course passed on to the customer. Buying directly from an individual bypasses these necessary charges. Although there are no warranties offered when buying a used car from an individual, doing so is generally the most cost efficient method of buying a pre-owned car.
Whether you purchase a used car from a dealer or an individual, have an independent licensed mechanic examine that vehicle before signing anything. If any problems are found, have the mechanic put these findings writing. You will more than likely be able to negotiate a lower price and have the car repaired before making your purchase, or you can choose not to purchase the vehicle at all. Stay informed, and you¡¯ll come out ahead in the search for your new car. |
