Does designing and programming video games sound like your dream job? Do you dream about spending all of your time at work doing something that you love and enjoy, and does having an end product mean a lot to you? Do you play video games on your own free time, and now you have a lot of experience and ideas of new video games that have yet to evolve? If you have answered all of these questions with an astounding yes, then a career in video game development and design is most likely for you!
Usually, to go about getting involved in this career, someone would start looking into colleges to learn programming languages. Some people can teach themselves programming, although it¡¯s probably much harder that way. If you are very interested in this but are low on cash, consider starting out at a community college and working your way up to a bachelor¡¯s or master¡¯s in computer science. Taking some classes in computer graphics also could be of a huge benefit for you, since then you could actually have some visual stimuli in addition to you programming. After you have finished your degree(s), moving to a big city would probably be of a big benefit to you. Cities like New York City, Washington, D.C. and Los Angeles would most likely have the most opportunities for people interested in jobs in video game development. Also, through your college years (and beyond), you should consider working on getting certified in as many programs as possible on your own. Someone in this field should constantly be learning about the newest languages, the newest changes in the languages and all of the newest technologies with computers. Working on your own time on your own independent projects (on top of the ones your professors give you), would also be great for not only your resume, but mostly for your experience in programming. Practice makes perfect. Practice paying attention to detail¡ªa very important skill to learn when programming.
It should not take too much of a job search to find a decent job (hopefully). Although it may not be your dream job right away, always keep your eye out for your dream job. Also, a lot of people (but not all, and you certainly don¡¯t HAVE to do this to become a video game developer/designer) interested in developing and designing video games open their own businesses. It¡¯s usually best to get some experience first in the business world, so you know how businesses operate. If you can somehow get a job at a place that makes video games and also be learning languages and programming skills on your own time, plus brainstorming ideas for video games that are not out yet but might attract a market, you will be well on your way to making your dream come true.
A few years of experience within a solid business is usually decent for someone wanting to start this own business. Of course, you need a solid idea and some start up money (including income if you quit your job to pursue something like that) if you are interested in developing your own business and developing your very own video games.
Whether you open your own business or work for an already-established business, your dream of becoming a video game designer and developer is well within your reach with a little hard work! |
