People who are well suited to work in non-profit organizations are those who are motivated by giving to others, who think in non-traditional ways, and who enjoy the culture of diversity and humanitarianism.  If your ideal workplace has faces that are every color of the rainbow, honors differences, and creates a real family-type feeling, then you are perfect for non-profit work.  Non-profits often cannot afford to pay people high salaries.  You can generally expect that your non-profit job will pay about 20-30% lower than a reasonable corporate counterpart, even if you¡¯re a CEO.  If you¡¯re still not scared, then you¡¯re the kind of world-citizen who will find a thriving, rewarding community in a non-profit workplace.

There are basically two ways to work in the non-profit sector:  Get a job in an established organization or start your own non-profit.  First, we will examine working for an established non-profit.  The good news is that these organizations are often grass-roots style bodies that value talents and experience over diplomas.  Of course, your diploma is valuable, but those who have talents and no documentation are often valued right along- side the college graduates.  

Do you have volunteer experience?  If so, this is a big boon to you in the non-profit market.  Find non-profits that are hiring in the field in which you have volunteered.  This includes things like fund drive coordination (think church), Girl/Boy Scouting, Neighborhood Watch Organizations, Crisis/Rape Counseling, any outreach work, or convincing others to volunteer or give to charity.  List your volunteer work on your resume when applying to any non-profit.  It is considered as valuable as paid employment. 

Are you willing and able to volunteer before accepting employment?  Those who have the luxury of working temporarily for free will have a foot in the door at their chosen organization.  If you give your time and energy to a non-profit and then a job opening in your area (or a related area) of expertise opens up, you will likely be among the first considered for the job.  Expect to maintain a good volunteer relationship with the organization for at least six months before applying for employment.  If you have at least a high school diploma and have proven your worth, you might be considered even in the absence of a college degree.  Be sure to check the hiring guidelines before applying, but also talk to those in charge if you know them, as they may be able to waive the education requirements for an interview.

Do you have a college degree, perhaps just starting out in the post-college workforce?  You are also at a premium for non-profit companies.  They love the enthusiasm and technical knowledge of new grads, and will eagerly place your resume at the top of the pile.  While you might not make top dollar your first few years, you will gain valuable experience and might be rewarded with quicker-than-average promotions and job titles in exchange for lower starting pay.  Check it out.

If you have drive and vision, starting your own non-profit organization might be the way to go.  Of course, this is a challenging road, and is fraught with uncertainty.  It is not a good option for those who need to support a family or who are in dire straits financially.  Preferably, the ideal candidate to start a non-profit will have a degree in a related field, such as Public Administration, Human Services Administration, or something similar.  Even if you don¡¯t have the education, however, a lot of hard work and research can allow you to succeed in the non-profit world.  Then, all that is necessary is to address a community need.

The first thing you should do when starting a non-profit is to go to the IRS website or local IRS affiliated office to find out about federal regulations governing non-profit organizations.  You must register properly and become aware of the rules regarding this type of entity.  Your state government¡¯s website might provide links to literature about starting non-profits, which will include information about grants and loans.  Too, your local community college or other community education may offer classes about non-profit businesses, and these are very worth the novice¡¯s time and money.  Half the battle is to understand how to write executive summaries, grants, and proposals, which have their own culture and language.

Most types of non-profit organizations are required to maintain a governing board of directors and an established hierarchy of control.  If you want to start your own non-profit, begin by writing a good, concise plan that addresses a community need, and then approach qualified people to serve on your board of directors.  These individuals can be great resources for technical advice.  Look for individuals who have non-profit experience, as well as other community leaders.  If your goal is solid, your project will gain momentum even if you lack experience.  A good place to start might be a neighborhood group or local board.  It takes a lot of hard work, and sometimes several years to accomplish the goal of starting a viable non-profit organization, but there are many examples of groups who have succeeded in creating their communities¡¯ dreams.  Whether it be a new community center, a homeless shelter, a professional organization, or another needed resource, your faith and vision can make a difference.  You will learn as you go, and your personal energy will pay off a hundred-fold.

Those who are suited to non-profit work are often misunderstood.  People shake their heads and say, ¡°but he could make so much money¡­¡±  It is testimony to your humanity and your values if you choose this rewarding, difficult path.  I did it for several years, and I would not trade the experience for anything.
