So, you want to begin a marketing career. Good for you! Marketing can be a rewarding and interesting field, one that offers an opportunity to work with all different types of people and industries. But how do you get started?

Formerly considered a separate field entirely, the term ˇ°marketingˇ± now serves as an umbrella that encompasses several distinct, but intimately connected, fields. Advertising, public relations, sales and promotions all provide their own type of marketing, and many companies draw on all these services to create an integrated, powerful marketing vehicle that encourages consumers and businesses to buy their products or services. But how do you get in on marketing if you've never worked in the field?

As a first step, decide what aspects of marketing interest you and which strengths you have that would fit in well with the marketing world. Do you like talking with people, or are you more retiring? Do you enjoy writing or design, or do you prefer numbers? If you have the gift of gab, business development or account sales might work best for you. On the other hand, if you prefer writing or graphic design, working as a copywriter or designer for an advertising or public relations agency might work best. Yet, if you prefer numbers, market research might be the perfect fit. 

Next, how competitive are you? If you are an extremely competitive individual who enjoys a challenge, sales might work best for you. If you're less competitive, you might be more comfortable as an in-house marketing representative for a large company. 

Whatever your personal preferences, if you're just starting out, chances are you will have to start at the bottom and work your way up. Working as a marketing or client relations assistant is a great way to begin in marketing. Even though you'll probably be doing a lot of grunt work, such as correspondence and filing, you will really have an opportunity to shine. Marketing assistants often wear many hats, particularly those at smaller companies. So not only will you have an opportunity to demonstrate your excellence, you'll also have a chance to dabble in different types of marketing so you'll know what type suits you best. 

If you're have a problem finding a job in marketing, consider an internship. Many companies offer both paid and unpaid internships and frequently choose to hire their interns. Even if they don't choose to hire you, those companies can be an excellent resource for professional references. 

Keep in mind, though, that marketing is an increasingly competitive field. Marketing jobs are snatched up almost before they're offered, so make sure you keep your finger on the pulse of the field. The absolute best way to do this is to make yourself a regular at some networking events. No, you don't have to spend all your time at these events, but it's a good idea to join an association or two or visit free networking events (many cities have them) to meet and greet people in your field. Develop and cultivate relationships with the people you meet there and pass out your contact information. 

Networking is probably the single best way for you to advance your marketing career. Not only do many marketing jobs never make it to the job boards, most marketing professionals are hired because marketing executives have already met them at networking events. So you'll not only meet some interesting characters, you'll be able to market yourself, exchange information with other marketing professionals and put faces to the names you hear in your industry.
