Home remodeling contractors often secure new business through word of mouth from satisfied customers and networking linkages. But you can do more to make your business stand out and grow by investing a few hours of time or a few dollars of profit.
1. Make your business cards specific. Many people aren't familiar with the range of services that a home remodeling contractor can provide. From upgrading a bathroom to finishing a basement, your company needs to specify and market the types of services you plan to sell. Get a business card that lists the top two or three things you do. List these on the front of the card or post them on the back, by themselves.
2. Develop a specialty niche that will form the basis of your advertising efforts. A slogan of three words like "Price, pride, prime" or a special service like chimneys ("We'll help you blow your stack") can become an identifiable trademark that customers will look for time and again when they need help with that part of their homes. Contact a copywriter or consult a long-time customer for help in creating a phrase or title that is catchy, not corny.
3. Display successful photographs of your work. Color photos work best, although black and white are good, too. Tuck these into transparent sleeves and place in a binder to show prospective clients. Remember to keep customer identification secure, so don't mention contact information for additional follow-up as references unless you have permission to do so. Organize the photos by category ("add-ons" or "decks") or chronologically to showcase your most recent work first.
4. Participate in local or state-wide home remodeling shows. These exhibits often appear in malls, civic centers, and other public forums for free or at a low cost to give visitors an idea of available services, and to provide opportunities for initial consults. Check with your NARI dealer for information about registering your services. You also may be able to independently visit local home supply stores to offer one-hour workshops on building basement steps or what to look when buying a new water heater. Even if you offer these free, the store's promotion of your event and the resulting participants can land you a generous amount of free publicity.
5. Advertise on the Internet. Create a Web page with a contact area or email address, along with mailing details or a telephone number. Make it easy for interested customers to get in touch with you as soon as they see something that appeals to them. Once the urge passes, you may have lost that opportunity forever. You can exchange banner ads with home improvement sites for greater Web exposure.
To gain a competitive edge, it's important to promote your services to the largest number of possible users. In addition to these tips, get in touch with the local small business administration, which often offers free services or advice, or the chamber of commerce. You may be able to trade advertising for services, since many folks are looking for a quality remodeling contractor to improve the function, safety, or aesthetic quality of their home. |
