Working at home is more popular than ever before since the advent of the Industrial Age. Some employees take office work home, fill out forms and reports, or work part- or full-time on a private business in addition to or instead of holding a traditional job working for others.

If you would like to consider working at home, but you're not sure about the best job to do, here are some of the more popular ways that people become self-employed in creating jobs based at their residence:

1. Marketing or sales. Working with or for another enterprise, you can do telemarketing at home to sell the products or services of others. Or you can create your own items to sell or skills that may be beneficial to other companies, such as developing filing systems. Whatever line of work you choose, chances are you will have to make some telephone calls to jump-start your business. But you also can do cold-calling and get paid to help other companies.

2. Computer work. You can do something as simple as data entry by preparing spread sheets for other companies. Or you can analyze reports and financial information to provide forecasts or develop proposals. Creating software applications or building Websites are more ways of making money from home, connecting with clients over the Internet or by email. 

3. Clerical support. Home-based typing businesses are lucrative now that pick-up and drop-ff tasks have been eliminated by electronic transmission. You can find not only local work from employers in town, but long-distance Internet work from clients around the world. In addition to typing from transmitted copy or audiotapes, you can proofread or edit others' work or do writing of your own, if you are good at it, as a copywriter, public relations specialist, or ghostwriter. 

4. Medical or legal transcription. After taking a course or two in medical or legal terminology, you may be able to work from home by transcribing audiotapes of dictation from doctors and lawyers. These can be delivered by mail or electronically transmitted over the Internet. The faster you work, the more you can do, of course, but accuracy is very important. Keep a grammar guide and dictionary handy.

5. Consulting or training. If you have developed expertise in a certain area, like human resources, quality control, or communications skills, you may be able to develop a training seminar that can be offered to local companies. This might involve a half-day or full day of sharing information and ideas in your specialty field. Check office supply stores or wholesalers for discounts on seminar items, like notebooks, markers, transparencies, folders, etc. 

6. Customer service. For those who enjoy working with people and problem-solving activities, a customer service job may offer a fulfilling job. You can receive or make calls on a special telephone line that links to your home. Then offer trouble-shooting tips, clearinghouse information, or suggestions for dealing with a particular product¡¯s flaws. Though working for another company, you will enjoy a fair amount of autonomy in setting your schedule and remaining at home instead of dressing for work and traveling to an office.
