Nursing jobs fill an important niche in our society. They assist doctors and other medical staff, treat and support people who are ill or dying, and educate family members about home going instructions or prescription medications. 

Yet within the nursing field, there are many different job options to choose from. Here are some of the more diverse options:

1. Hospital nurse. Here the nursing staff is divided among the various floors or units to treat patients with a wide range of conditions and illnesses. Form newborn babies to dying seniors, human medical needs are complex and challenging. Nurses serve as the bridge between doctors and patients or their families, providing information, treatment, and follow-up care. They may assist with surgery or anesthesia, tend wounds, chart vital signs, observe symptoms, and report changes. They are the doctor's eyes and the patient's voice. 

2. Nursing facilities. Temporary rehabilitation centers, convalescence units, and nursing care for the elderly or infirm provide many jobs for professional nurses. Patient care demands a nurse's patience and perseverance, and they often work long hours without seeing positive results. The advantage to this type of work is knowing that you are making someone's life a little better or a little easier. 

3. School nurse. Either part- or full-time, school nurses check students for chronic conditions like vision problems or asthma symptoms. They also observe and suggest treatment options for head lice, ringworm, or other acute symptoms that are common among schoolchildren. It is the nurse's job to determine if a child needs to be seen by the family doctor, whether a child is contagious, and whether he or she should remain in school or be sent home with a parent. Nurses are obliged to report suspected symptoms of child abuse to civil authorities.

4. Company nurse. Many larger businesses keep a nurse on staff to look after employees the way a school nurse monitors students. At a company, the nurse may be able to recognize and treat flu or viral symptoms, eye injuries, and bodily wounds and administer or train others in first aid techniques. The nurse can seek medical assistance if she suspects an environmental problem within the organization, such as a gas leak or carbon monoxide poisoning. He or she may be able to identify a contagious outbreak and recommend a company's temporary closing if necessary.

5. Medical office nurses. At a doctor's office or clinic, nurses can prepare a patient for a visit with the doctor by taking vital signs, charting symptoms, and organizing previous data. Following a consultation with the doctor, the nurse will draw the patient's blood work, provide medical samples, and give injections. Many nurses assist the doctor in a variety of ways that helps to make the visit smoother for everyone.
