After someone has dedicated twenty or more years of their life to the Armed Forces, it is a common practice for them to receive a commemorative gift symbolic of their retirement. Usually the gift is presented to the retiree during a special luncheon or dinner, which is held a few days prior to the actual retirement ceremony, as an opportunity for everyone to get together and remember old times. This gift is often unique in design and is purchased with donations given by coworkers from the retiree¡¯s squadron. It can be difficult to come up with good gift ideas for a Military retirement especially if the retiree has been involved in many different things throughout his or her career, so it is usually a good idea to enlist the help of a close friend or relative when choosing the best gift.
One very good gift idea that is appropriate for any Military retirement would be a Military shadow box. A Military shadow box contains every squadron patch, MAJCOM patch or squadron coin from each base that the retiree has been stationed at throughout their Military career. The shadow box, which is usually a wooden box with a velvet backing and a glass front, can be purchased at most Base Exchanges or Clothing Sales stores located on base. The coins and patches can be purchased or special ordered at the Clothing Sales store on base as well.
If the service member who is retiring has a special personal interest, it is always a good idea to buy a gift that pertains to that interest. For example if the retiree is interested in motorcycles and plans on spending a lot of time using one after their retirement a monogrammed leather jacket would be a nice retirement gift. If a leather jacket is too expensive it is also easy to find helmets, tote bags and chaps that can be designed with the squadron patch or logo on it. All of these items would have to be special ordered from a local store or on the internet unless the base that the retirement is taking place at is equipped with graphics design personnel.
Another gift idea would be to purchase a special collectable item that the retiree is interested in pursuing. Most Military members are interested in past wars that their country has been involved in and collect items pertaining to one or two specific events in history. Collectable guns, knives, bullets, documents and uniforms can be purchased as a gift and given with a plaque from the squadron. This idea can be applied to any area of interest that the retiree might have including small-scale models, clocks, dogs, poetry and other personal effects.
Any retirement gift should be carefully thought out and have significant personal meaning to the retiree. It is important to remember that the person receiving the gift has endured many hardships throughout their career and sacrificed many things to get to that coveted retirement day. Many of the finest Military members never make it to the twenty year mark for retirement because of death or serious injuries that prohibit them from finishing their time in service. The gift and the congratulations of fellow coworkers should make the retiree feel honored and proud of the work that they have accomplished throughout their Military career.
