All work and no play makes the office a dull, dull place. Face it. We¡¯re at our office for forty or more hours a week, so why not liven things up a little around the holidays to boost employee morale and create an environment that people will enjoy coming to every weekday morning? Halloween is just around the corner and is one of the easiest holidays to plan office events and contests for since the entire essence of Halloween revolves around acting like kids and having fun.
Costume Contest
A costume contest is, naturally, a shoe-in for a Halloween activity. You can keep it simple and have people dress up as whichever character they choose, or you can create a theme costume contest with rules to follow. For example, have everybody come in a costume that is homemade. Rules for this contest might include that people can not go out and purchase or rent a costume or use a piece of clothing that is pre-made. You may limit the items they can use to make things interesting. Or you can tell everybody to dress up as their favorite Disney character. Why not try pairing up colleagues in teams of two and have them come in as famous ¡°couples¡± like Siegfried and Roy or Sonny and Cher. If your office has many divisions or departments, tell each one that they must dress up as a team or group. Some examples might include a group of warriors or the cast of ¡°Seinfeld.¡±
Pumpkin Carving Contest
If your office, like mine, consists of people who would rather staple their own lips together than dress up in costume and drive to work, why not have a pumpkin carving contest? The best way to run a contest like this is to decide whether you want people to enter the contest as individuals or as a team/department effort. Other than that, do not issue any other rules. Letting your colleagues¡¯ imaginations run wild will give you the ultimate results. Some people will surely just carve the pumpkin in a traditional manner while others may actually ¡°create¡± a body for the pumpkin head and dress it up. Either way, it will be quite an interesting event!
Cube Decorating Contest
It¡¯s fun to decorate your home for Halloween, but it¡¯s quite another level of fun to be able to decorate that five foot by five foot cube space that comprises your office. You have a limited amount of space, so creativity will be of the essence. Make sure to speak to your boss about decorations that may or may not be permitted such as string lights and candles. As with the costume contest, you can have entrants choose their own theme or you can create an overall theme. An example may include having the contestants decorate their cube in the theme of their favorite scary movie, such as ¡°Howling¡± or ¡°Exorcist.¡± You can imagine the different ideas that would spring up from these themes.
Before deciding on any activity or contest, make sure to speak with your boss about allotting work time for both decorating/carving (if applicable) and judging. Prizes can be as simple as printed up 1st, 2nd and 3rd place certificates or smaller prizes like $5 gift certificates or candy. |
